I always figured Harry's teenage rage would just about do the trick.

And it's funny, because I always had a lot of respect for the way JKR introduced all her climax-relevant plot devices near the beginning of the books to which they were relevant, so she never pulled anything out that hadn't first been innocuously woven into an earlier scene by way of introduction. The fact that this generally happens within a given book rather than across books isn't a big deal, IMO.

The exception to that would be the Deathly Hallows, because we're not just talking a book climax there, we're talking a series climax, so they should have been introduced earlier in the series. (Or cut out altogether. I mean, seriously, why do we NEED them? Harry destroys Voldy's Horcruxes, Voldy tries to curse some random student, curse rebounds because Harry's "done what his mother did" and died for them, bye-bye Voldy. Much cleaner, not to mention more epic.)

i have my doubts about teenage rage, but meh.

i do appreciate that she makes them more or less standalone books, but i just feel like they would have been better if there had been hints of these things dropped in previous books--like the horcruxes! that wasn't bad, although book 5 was fairly late in the series. but you look and you're like "aaahh i remember that evil looking locket" or "aha! sirius had a brother named regulus!" and it was great, yknow?
and agreed about the hallows. probably going to rant on them more when i hit book 7 again--my first reread!

Ah, but you're forgetting the diary!

yknow what would have been CLEVER if there had been one in each book that appeared? hm.
1. harry
2. diary
4. nagini
5. locket
i don't even really remember the other ones. ring?
nah, not quite... i mean i guess theyre kinda tied in? and we've had the invisi cloak since the beginning, but we were never aware that there were different kidns of invis cloaks etc etc and that this one was special...
iuno. i still feel like there wasn't that much that tied it together in a satisfactory way, yknow? it wasn't "ahhhhhhhhhhhhh now that makes sense! this is what i've been waiting for for 5 years!" but more like "ah, that thing she alluded to in ch 5."

I think Animagi count as being introduced earlier, because we see McGonagall do her cat trick in #1. I'd count that as being similar to Parseltongue, actually -- we see it very early on in Book 1, but don't realize it's important until a later book.

I'm with Jessica in that introducing things at the beginning of their respective books doesn't bother me, though. What I find frustrating is when the later books stop introducing new concepts, and rely on the same things over and over again. I thought Rita being an Animagus was really sloppy for the book after Sirius is revealed as one, and I would be happy if the Polyjuice Potion hadn't been seen again after Book 2.

ah, now that you mention it, i actually liked the polyjuice reappearing. rita the animagus was kinda sloppy though. 7 registered animagi, we know mcgonagall is one, and then FOUR unregistered ones show up? clearly it's not as difficult as it's made out to be.

i guess i just wanted something more intellectually satisfying, especially at the series finale. consider all the speculation and theorizing going on, and then that we had no clue what the deathly hallows were until she told us in book 7 and we had no way to guess? that i think is what i found most aggravating.

The main thing I took away from Harry Potter when it was all said and done is the true meaning of deus ex machina.

If they had all stayed somewhat self-contained, like the first two books, Rowling's tendency to just make shit up wouldn't have bothered me as much... as they were written the series just stopped being fun.
