picture this scene--
in the shrieking shack, ron and hermione terrifiedly watching as harry advances on sirius, wand pointed straight at his heart. crookshanks leaps onto sirius' chest, ready to give his life. harry steels his nerves, prepared to kill them both...
and stops.
because he has no idea what the killing curse is, or how in fact to kill someone. avada kedavra hasn't been introduced yet, has it? and he plans to what, point his wand angrily and channel all his teenage rage out? stab him in the chest with his wand?
rrrrrrrrrrrrrrright.
also, we always knew the timeturner was a plothole the size of a 7-book series, but did any of hermione's other professors wonder how she was getting to class? i mean, teachers talk. and none of them are like "oh that miss granger, we had an excellent class this morning" "oh yes, me too! aren't our classes at the same time?" "curious that, it's almost like she's in two places at once."
but secretly, only mcgonagall and dumbledore know, and nobody else wonders (including any other friends hermione has--but wait, hermione doesn't have any other friends. harry, ron, and maybe hagrid, and then crookshanks. not like she lives with 5ish other griffindor girls who we basically never meet for SEVEN YEARS or anything.
also, you'd think that rowling having had this 7-book series planned out for so long would have some plot threads woven through the books... hints of things to come, stuff like that. but no, most everything plot-critical is sprung on the reader in the very book where it becomes important. (there are a few exceptions: the invisibility cloak and parseltongue are there from book 1, and some of the horcruxes show up in like book 5.)
fawkes? spotted in dumbledore's office, book 2.
animagi? learn about them in mcgonagall's class 3rd year.
portkeys? don't see them until they're going to the world cup in book 4.
don't even get me started on the deathly hallows.
anyway, i'm on book 4 so there may be more of these to come.
