It just sounds like an opportunistic fox thing. They just kill stuff whether or not they're going to eat it or not... or at least that's what years of listening to The Archers has told me ;-)
We also have been getting dead frogs and no frogspawn in the last week or so. I think it's probably our dog, to be honest, as he does seem to like the pond a little more than we'd have expected, and I'd guess his presence would have put off any local foxes from hanging out in our garden much.
i'm not sure about dogs and foxes. neighbourhood dogs barking here is often a sign that the foxes are moving around - dog barking and fox arrival/presence often going together. i would have thought simialrly to yourself that dogs and foxes wouldn't have much tolerance for each other... but apparenly cats and foxes do, so.. *shrug* this i've read on a website in the not too distant past, but also heard first hand - while john and sarah and the cats were living here in the summer, apparently the cats and the foxes used to be companionable about the garden, each giving the other space/mutual respect.
