Elizabeth didn’t realize that Jason was a fantasy till it was too late.

Since she was eighteen years old, Jason had always represented the road not traveled. If Lucky hadn’t come back from the dead, and she’d gone to Italy with him. If she hadn’t run out on him because he lied. If the night they conceived their son, they hadn’t been in love with different people.

Their history was littered with what might have beens.

But now, in the present, they were together. They loved each other. They had a beautiful son. For so long no one had known, that the day it finally came out was a relief. It felt good to finally be able to proclaim to the world that she was his and he was hers.

Elizabeth thought that was what she had wanted.

She had fought for it, after all. After the tragedy of Michael, she’d had to practically beg Jason not to walk away from the promises they’d made to each other. It had taken months before he was willing to let people in on the secret of their engagement, longer still for him to actually admit that Jake was his. The day he finally agreed that she and the boys should move into the penthouse, that they should take the last step in becoming a family, she’d actually cried tears of joy.

This was what Elizabeth had wanted for as long as she could remember.

It didn’t take long for her to remember what living with Jason was like, however. Phone calls at all times of the day, him slipping out the door without a word, meetings she had to pretend not to see, the nagging feeling that Sonny and Carly and the “business” would always come first.

The first night he didn’t come home, she stayed up all night waiting, worried for him. The second, she stayed awake, wishing that Emily were alive and that she had someone to talk to. The third, she took a sleeping pill and tried to make herself remember that this had been what she’d wanted.

Maybe the worst part was that she couldn’t tell anyone what she was feeling. Lucky would probably laugh in her face, Emily was dead, her grandmother wasn’t speaking to her, and Nikolas had decided that she wasn’t fit to be part of his family any longer.

Besides, when she’d ignored all their advice and warnings, Elizabeth didn’t feel as though she really had the right to complain. She’d chosen this path, and now, she had to see it through.

She just wished that she had realized the truth of what Jason was sooner.

He’d never been anything more than a fantasy.
