For a month after Robin almost died in the MetroCourt’s lobby, Patrick carried an engagement ring in his pocket at all times.
When his mother died, her rings came to him. At eighteen and grieving, he hadn’t really cared about the significance of it as a keepsake, a legacy. Throughout college and med school it had just been something that he thought about when going through his safe deposit box at the bank. Out of sight, out of mind. Not long after moving to Port Charles, meeting Robin, he’d moved it to his home safe.
His subconscious had already known that she would change his life.
The day he realized he loved Robin, long before he found the (wrong) words to tell her, he’d pulled the small velvet box out of the safe and stared at the ring within. He knew then that she was the only woman he’d ever want to offer the ring to.
After Robin was shot, as she was recovering, he wanted every day to offer her the ring, to beg her to promise him forever, as if that would prevent the living nightmare he’d just endured from happening again.
But something stopped him each time, whether fear of rejection, nerves, timing, or uncertainty that he’d ever deserve her. And then, ultimately, the next year proved that the time hadn’t been right.
The day he knew for certain that Robin’s baby was their baby, after he very nearly proved her right again, he went home to what he still wished was their apartment and slipped the ring into his pocket again.
This time, he vowed, he’d find the right words to ask.
