These days it seemed like Robin only called Brenda to give her bad news.
December 2005, “Patrick Drake is the most infuriating man I’ve ever met.” February 2006, “I just found out that my father was pretending to be dead.” March 2006, “Jax is dating Carly.” June 2006, “Carly and Jax kidnapped Nikolas’ son.” July 2006, “Patrick cut himself with an infected needle.” February 2007, “I was held hostage and almost died. Alan did die.” July 2007, “My mom is dating Patrick’s dad!” September 2007, “Patrick and I broke up for good.” November 2007, “Emily was murdered.” December 2007, “So was Georgie.”
So it was a relief to be able to dial the familiar number without any trepidation. Sure, it still might not have been under ideal circumstances, but at least Brenda would be unreservedly happy for her. Brenda would understand just how much this meant to her, would understand that she’d never thought this day would come.
Robin picked up the phone and hit 2 (Brenda was still miffed she wasn’t first in her speed dial). It had barely started to ring when Brenda picked up.
“Robin?” her best friend’s worried voice came through the line. “What’s wrong sweetheart?”
Robin chuckled softly. “I have good news this time, Bren.”
Brenda’s tone brightened. “Oh! Well then spill, girlfriend. It’s been awhile since you called me with that.”
“I’m pregnant.” Robin held the phone away from her ear slightly. She knew exactly how loud Brenda could squeal. Instead, silence filled the line. “Brenda? Did you hear me?”
“Omigod!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!” Came the delayed enthusiastic reaction that Robin had expected. “How did this happen? Never mind, that doesn’t matter, when are you due? Do you want me there? How can I help?” An endless string of questions poured forth from her lips, and all Robin could do was sit back and smile as she listened to her best friend ramble on and on.
Calling with good news was so much better.
