Kristina ran to the door, flinging it open to Lucky standing outside. “Hi Lucky!” she exclaimed happily. “Do you want to come in?”

“Kristina!” Alexis’s voice scolded from behind her. “Did you check to see who it was?”

She hung her head slightly. “No, I forgot.” She frowned. “But it was just Lucky!”

“Your mom is right, Kristina,” Lucky spoke up. “You should check to see who it is all the time, even if it’s someone you know.”

“But why?”

“Is because I said so a good enough reason?” Alexis asked dryly. She walked up and stood behind Kristina, running a hand along her head. “Just be more careful next time, alright sweetheart?”

“Alright,” she said agreeably. “Now can Lucky come in?” She reached out and tugged on his hand, pulling him inside.

Alexis and Lucky both laughed at her insistence. “I suppose I don’t really have a choice in the matter,” he joked.

Alexis pushed the door closed behind him, and turned back to face her daughter and her, well, it was hard to define what Lucky was to her. “What can we do for you today, Lucky?”

He looked up from Kristina. “Actually, I came by to see Spencer. I figure he needs to be around familiar faces right now.”

Alexis frowned. “That’s a good idea, actually, but he’s taking a nap right now.”

“Oh,” Lucky said. He looked down at his watch. “Well, do you mind if I wait a little while? I’d really like to see him.”

“No, of course not,” Alexis answered. “But I have to run out, so do you mind waiting by yourself?”

“He won’t be by himself,” Kristina piped up. “I can entertain him.” She looked up at Lucky adoringly. “Want to play cards?”

Lucky laughed and ruffled her hair. “I’d love to.” He looked up at Alexis. “If you’re sure it’s alright?”

“No, no, it’s fine,” Alexis reassured. She narrowed her eyes slightly at her daughter. “Just don’t play for anything you don’t want to lose with that one. She’s a card shark.” She reached down and pressed a kiss to the top of Kristina’s head. “Be good, you hear?” She shot a final smile at the two of them, grabbed her briefcase and headed out the door.

Lucky turned to Kristina and asked, “So what are we going to play, Go Fish?”

The little girl arched an eyebrow and made a face. “Go Fish? That’s for babies.”

“Okay,” Lucky said slowly. “What did you have in mind?”

“Blackjack,” Kristina said matter-of-factly. Without waiting for a response, she skipped off to another room to grab a deck of cards.

Lucky sat back on his heels. Blackjack? Suddenly Alexis’s warning made a lot more sense. But who had taught a six year old how to play blackjack?

“I found them,” she announced happily as she skipped back into the room. She tugged Lucky over to the coffee table, and handed him the cards. “You need to deal,” she said. “My hands aren’t big enough to shuffle right, yet.”

He took the cards from her, eying her warily. He slid the cards from the box and started shuffling them.

Somehow, Lucky knew that he was never going to win this game.
