RE: Tonight's Futurama...

What is with the cliche of female leads in animated sitcoms becoming real estate agents or realtors? Marge Simpson did it. Peggy Hill did it. I think Francine Smith did it. And now Leela's done it. What a weird cliche.

Stop nitpicking! It was a mighty fine episode! Too bad we never saw those Korean gamer girls. :(

I thought for sure the Korean gamer girls would show up. I'm not nitpicking. Just commenting on something weird. Has Lois Griffin become a realtor yet? :P I wouldn't be surprised if they made Leela a realtor in this episode just as a joke, recognizing the trend that was started with the Simpsons.

They do it in not-animated sitcoms, too.

Haven't watched many of those in a while. Weird. I wonder what makes it their 'go-to' job for female characters...

I do not watch many, but I had a roomie who watched Reba, wherein Reba was a realtor: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reba_%28TV_series%29

Maybe it's viewed as a 'job which a stay-at-home-mum would be qualified for', and 'you can do it part-time', 'it's low-stress' (when it usually turns out to be quite high-stress for the woman in question, who usually quits by the end of the episode to spend more time with her friends and family and less working) along with 'you're a woman, you can wear a red jacket and sell stuff', and 'you don't have to be sexy to work in real estate', for those trying to demonstrate the concept of look, our character can work with something that isn't her body, we're progressive ( ... )
