Superhero recognition

I was thinking about how recognizable superheroes were, and by this I mean, if you walk up to someone on the street and ask, what are the odds that they'll know who you mean ( Read more... )

I think Wonder Woman may be more iconic than Spider-Man. She certainly easily beats everyone you tried to list as being on her level. Also, I would tend to argue that Iron Man is higher than fourth tier. Wolverine is probably second tier. Xavier and the Phoenix need to be up somewhere.

I think Aunt May is in the top three, but I am not sure who she beats. I don't think Perry White belongs anywhere in the list, as I have only the vaguest idea who he is. I think Spider-Man's uncle needs to be somewhere.

...in fact, how about this. You make a list of characters and have a random population sample rank them from 1 to 4 as to how recognisable they are?

Yeah, but globaly, there are studies that show that Spider-Man is the third most recognizable hero in the world, behind Superman and Batman. Earth actually nailed it dead on with those three.

She certainly easily beats everyone you tried to list as being on her level.

I agree with this one.

Also, I would tend to argue that Iron Man is higher than fourth tier.

He's attempting to discount the influence of movies, which is... frankly impossible in an attempt to list recognizable characters from a form of popular entertainment.

Wolverine is probably second tier.

Agreed.

Xavier and the Phoenix need to be up somewhere.

He does list X-Men as a lump group, but I do agree that those two deserve a higher ranking then X-Men as a whole. Also, Cyclops, Storm, and Rogue. Less so for the rest.

I don't think Perry White belongs anywhere in the list, as I have only the vaguest idea who he is.

You do? Great Ceasar's Ghost!

I think Spider-Man's uncle needs to be somewhere.I dunno. If ( ... )

He said "they haven't watched TOO MANY of the movies or cartoons." Emphasis is mine. I think that's what makes Iron Man a reasonable request for prolific character but not, say, Mandarin, who was the regular villain in his 90's cartoon.

I'm hesitant to judge the lasting impact of the new Iron Man movie, even though it was very successful... God, does this mean Iron Monger can go on the list of villains? :)

I'm pro-bumping up Wolverine, and Iron Man needs to go up at LEAST one tier.

I think a few image characters could go to level 4--Witchblade and Spawn specifically spring to mind.

I would also swap Alfred with Aunt May. Actually, scratch that. Aunt May should be #3, and Alfred, Uncle Ben and Perry White should be in a third-tier ranking. Alfred is awesome, but if you asked someone who Alfred was they probably wouldn't know. You'd have to say "Alfred the Butler", because very few people know he's Alfred Pennyworth.

Now that I think about it, I want to put The Incredibles in as a third-tier team. They're superheroes! You never said anything about superheroes from Comic Books. :D

Punisher should be a third-tier 'hero', Dr Doom and possibly Magneto deserve to be a second-tier villain.

I thought of Image (and other independant) characters, but I really think their time has come and gone. If Todd had stuck with Spawn as artist and/or writer longer, and if the movie hadn't sucked, maybe he would have broken into the mainstream better. You're almost certainly right about the Incredibles. They're owned by Disney and as you surely know, Disney never lets us forget about anything they've ever done if there's money to be made. :)

I bet if you asked someone who Batman's butler is, they would know a fair share of the time. You're dead on about the last name, though. Even I didn't know that one off the top of my head. :) Otherwise, I tend to agree in regards with the supporting cast.

You may be right about the Punisher, but I'd knock him down to fourth tier. I really think Doctor Doom and Magento (their names did specifically come to mind) are in a third tier. I just can't believe they have the same exposure as the iconic Batman villains. Who else could be in that tier though? Doctor Octopus and the Green Goblin maybe?

Magneto had his name mentioned in a Paul McCartney song.

Of course, so did Titanium Man, and even I don't know who the hell that is.

(For awhile, Paul McCartney had the largest comic book collection in the world.)

I think that Doom and Mags are better than the two Spidey villains. Magneto would have more exposure than, say, Riddler. Perhaps keep Catwoman and Luthor in Tier two and bump Riddler to three with Mags and Doom?

And I took the current status of Image characters into account--in their heyday they would have been tier 2.

As for who Batman's butler is, you're dead right there. I just didn't think that form of question would apply. I bet most people in the world would be surprised that he would have a pencil-thin though moustache though!
