I was thinking about how recognizable superheroes were, and by this I mean, if you walk up to someone on the street and ask, what are the odds that they'll know who you mean.
The Big Three: #1) Superman; #2) Batman; #3) Spider-Man (I don't think this is particularly debatable!)
Second Tier: The Hulk, Captain America, Wonder Woman, the Flash, Robin
Third Tier: Green Arrow, Green Lantern, the Fantastic Four, Wolverine
Fourth Tier: Captain Marvel (Shazam!), Iron Man, Daredevil, Thor
Other mainstream characters (X-Men, Avengers, Plastic Man, Justice League)
Supporting casts:
The Big Three: #1) Lois Lane; #2) Commissioner Gordon; #3) Alfred (Batman's butler)
Second Tier: Aunt May, Perry White (editor of the Daily Planet), Jimmy Olsen, MAYBE Mary Jane Watson
Villains:
#1: The Joker
Second Tier: Lex Luthor, Catwoman, the Penguin, the Riddler
Note the prevalence of DC characters. I encourage you all to add your input. My format is as follows: A) This is just general recognition -- "Oh, the guy with the ring!" is good enough for Green Lantern; B) It must be lasting fame -- temporary bursts from a current movie don't count; and C) assume they haven't watched too many of the movies or cartoons. :) Please, contribute your thoughts. :)
