[Katara hasn't been oblivious to everything that people have said here either, but this is her first experiment. It's hard for her to believe that anything could have this much power over anyone's hearts, let alone a whole village. She was doubtful about Sokka and Toph, but then they did have two months here alone and she had a suspicion that Toph might have liked Sokka... so it could be true? I'm pretty sure this doesn't have to do with their skill. But that's good to know. I can almost always tell if someone is lying, though. Their heartbeat is different.

Then you have an advantage. Still, I've met people who are quite good at deception. There's also manipulation and things along the lines of brainwashing. Too many reasons why just figuring out lies wouldn't be enough.

Yeah, and even that's not enough. I mean, Azula told me she was a giant pink platypus bear and her heartbeat didn't even move. But...she's pretty scary anyway. And probably crazy.
