peacocks and their feathers . . .

Recently I was at my friend Debra's house and she pointed out to me the new feathers coming in on one of her young male peacocks. I guess I'd never thought about how those beautiful, gorgeous feathers grow, but that fluff of white there on the back are the beginning of new feathers starting to form. These are a bit like chooks, where the new feathers come in and replace the down. Except that they grow a lot slower. What beautiful and magnificent birds!

I'll have to do more studying up on this as I'm wondering how long it takes to grow those long tail feathers. Maybe several years. I think they molt and lose them each year, but not positive. Yes, magnificent!

I'm not sure, but O would think they they would grow those long tails in in their first year of growth, and they may moult each year. I'm not sure. You'd think it would take a lot out of the bird top grow those each year.

I'm sure there's a lot more to it and I'm curious how long it takes to grow those tail feathers, so I'll probably do some more research on this.
