Cockroach Bay Preserve . . .

We purposely went there at the end of the day, about an hour before sundown. Priscilla and I had seen spoonbills sporadically in the wetlands along the road before, but this day we were pleasantly surprised by 18 beautiful pink birds! Soon after we arrived they started flying one or two at a time to a group of trees about a quarter of a mile ( Read more... )

Huge pink birds are so exotic to me, and eighteen of them in a tree at twilight is magical. Glad you caught the magic.

The spoonbills are my favorite water birds and I am always on the lookout for that pink color to catch my eye wherever I go.

Once in a great while I'll see one or two in a tree, but usually they are on the ground and in shallow water. I was disappointed at first when they started to fly further away, but then this shot turned out to be something special. Thanks for your delightful comment!

Oh! I was thinking just that! I've always seen pictures of spoonbills, on the ground, at the shore. I don't think I've seen them in trees before! Seems odd but your picture is wonderful!

Before I moved to Florida, I'd only seen the little backyard birds in trees. When I saw my first big water bird (a great blue heron) standing at the top of a tall tree, I thought I was dreaming.

Thanks, Nancy. Yes, if they could sing, I wonder what they would sound like.

Absolutely beautiful photo! I like how the sun catches the birds and they are almost glowing!

Thank you, Beth! It only lasted a few moments then dusky darkness settled quickly everywhere and we were left standing there in the dark.
