I guess I never thought of them as "otherworldly," but yes. I'm sure you knew that the cartoon Woody Woodpecker was modeled after the pileated woodpecker.
That bird was busy! What a thrill to see it. Thanks for the photos - I have never seen one of them, of course. and I see that 'air plant' which must be native to where you are. They are only seen in gardens here.
Oh, I'm glad you enjoyed them, especially since you'd never seen one before. This is only my second sighting of one in 37 years here. I was just so excited!!!
The air plant and the Spanish moss are native here and very common. It's hard to look in any tree around here and not see one or the other or both.
