I think your thoughts are closest to my thoughts of any review I have read. I feel a little dense that I did not see some of it coming because usually I do (and I blame it on the hydrocodone), but I am glad I did not because it made it so much more enjoyable for me. I think the only thing I really didn't care for was the gratuitous use of Hitler. There was no reason to include him when all they did was what they did. But aside from that I pretty much totally agree with you.
Yeah, I think I was happy that I was so thick. Sometimes, it's so nice to be surprised, you know?
What I liked about the Hitler thing was that it sort of belittles him, in my view, the idea that he was a terrible person who did unspeakably, unspeakably awful things and therefore should be shoved in a cupboard.
All I want is an entire episode of Rory/Amy backstory. Seriously, I watched that bit OVER AND OVER AGAIN because they are just so freaking cute. Amy thought Rory was gay! Rory being so incredibly awkwardly in love with her! I'm always going to love anything that involves Rory, but their bits as kids/teenagers were just so freaking adorable I couldn't stand it.
The backstory really, really helped me. I was so confused about how they ended up together, so I'm so glad it got clarified for me a little bit in this episode.
Personally, I still want to view the name-telling as a means of marriage, bonding, or sex. Don't ask me why I prefer that - I just do. So I guess we'll wait and see. Probably, I'll be proven wrong, but until then, I'll hold onto hope
( ... )
Hmm. Hypnotherapy is an interesting idea. Like in Dollhouse.
River's diary is gorgeous. I think they should be selling it!
I was really surprised at how quickly things played out, too. Pleasantly so. I felt like we made huge leaps ahead for so early in the season. At least, it felt that way. Who knows what will happen? They might all be red herrings!
It wouldn't surprise me if they use the River thing to explain why DW can keep going past Doctor Thirteen.
I'm assuming Amy and Rory were fairly devastated over the summer, but I think there's a way in which the baby still feels a little abstract to them. There was no real pregnancy, and the baby only existed a couple of minutes, so I think they definitely want their baby and miss their baby but I think there's a disconnect happening for them.
I'm in the midst of re-reading Chaos Theory, and I just got to the bit where the Doctor is asking Sarah Jane for help watching the kids, and he tells her that he's "So familiar with guilt." Which had me bawling SO HARD in light of this episode.
All in all I agree with how lovely the episode was. The only thing that left me wanting was Mels' backstory. It felt very forced and squeezed in to me. Though that mostly stems to how neglected I've felt Amy and Rory's home life has been this whole time. Mels was important enough to both of them to name their child after her, yet they haven't mentioned her once in the past two years of traveling with the Doctor? I did see it coming that Mels=Melody, and I think I might not have seen that coming if Mels had been introduced before Melody.
She was EXACTLY like River. I really can't believe I didn't catch that!
The coat is AMAZING. And yeah, the tux thing is driving me crazy. WHAT IS HE DOING THERE?
I don't think they're okay, I think they're completely bewildered. Like, they know intellectually Mels is their daughter, and River is their daughter, but they still...want their daughter, the little baby they had, and Mels and River isn't it, so they don't feel attached to them. And I don't know what's going on with the baby at this point.
Rory is so awesome. He's grown SO much. He's just fantastic.
The regeneration thing being used to explain the continuation of the show is actually kind of clever.

I wish that Mels had been mentioned before, I agree. That would really have blown my mind.

I have no idea why I didn't see it coming. You're totally right, IT'S RIGHT THERE IN THE NAME, and I still didn't see it.
