This country was founded on a steadfast opposition to that statement.

And..the fence won't work. I forgot which governor/rep from Arizona or New Mexico who said 'if you build a 50-foot fence, they'll use a 51-foot ladder.'

But fences are visible, like public searches at airports and the like. People see it and think something is actually being done.

Yeah...what's being done is destruction of land and people. Natural resources. That's SO smart. Not.

These people are old enough to remember the so-called "antifaschistischer Schutzwall", too. Someone should put up a "YOU ARE LEAVING THE AMERICAN SECTOR" sign.

If you go to www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/thereithlectures2007/ you can listen to, or download, a very impressive lecture given by Jeffrey Sachs. One thing he talks about is a legal obligation under a UN charter to contribute to biodervisity to which the US has signed up. I'm certain it won't stop your local blockheaads, but it might give you a bit more ammunition.

By the way, this layout produces a comment box that is very very light grey on which, and in a tiny font, so I am more or less typing blind.

Boy, waiving all Federal, State, or other laws...that must come in handy. I wonder if I should try that sometime.

I'm not entirely sure why Chertoff believes he is entitled to waive state law ( ... )
