This afternoon I saw a treehopper (or some kind of hopper) on the kitchen window screen, so went outside to photograph it.

I was afraid that we had lost our crayfish in the 5 year drought--they disappeared and did not return for well over a year when the drought ended.  But this year...this year we've got 'em.   Here are a few pictures of the crayfish and where they've shown up since late December.  I haven't even made it down to the far end of the place to photograph ( Read more... )

Today I noticed an unfamilar small butterfly--quite a few of them in fact--flying low above the grass and occasionally perching with wings folded (more rarely, with wings open briefly.)  From a distance (and with my eyesight!) they appeared to be cream and orange.  When photographed (and the photographs put into the computer)  the dorsal side of ( Read more... )

As I've said before (as you know Bob) I grew up in a hot, often humid climate.   I was a healthy kid, outdoors a lot, and though I certainly didn't enjoy the sticky hot nights before my mother put in a window AC, I could play hard outdoors in the summer without a problem.  Through high school, college, and even moving back to Texas after leaving ( Read more... )

I was walking back to the house today when I heard a sort of scuffling noise that seemed to be coming from the carport.   It didn’t sound like an ordinary cat-noise, but I thought one of the idiot younglings might have gotten up in the engine compartment and then stuck there.  Or even (not a happy thought) in the interior of the car.   No cat, ( Read more... )
