On Stranger Tides

After viewing “Pirates of the Caribbean - On Stranger Tides”, I have to say something I never thought I’d say about a Pirates movie: Meh.

I liked it just fine, don’t get me wrong. If you liked the other movies, I’d still suggest seeing it. I just felt it was lacking some of the fun and spectacle that made the other movies great. And, again, I felt ( Read more... )

For the missionary thing, I kind of assumed that they were treating the story that a mermaid's kiss stops a man from drowning as true. Although I have no clue how that would save him, as he would still bleed out and probably end up mermaid chow for the other mermaids. Either that or we weren't supposed to care if he lived or died because he'd received his forgiveness? But that would leave me deeply unsatisfied.

Deeply unsatisfied...yes, that's it. If they'd just had a throwaway line about mermaids also being able to heal, or being able to turn regular men into mermen...something. I also wanted it to be clearer what drew them together in the first place. He thought she tried to save him, but it was hard to say for sure, and why would she have, anyway? He hadn't really done anything particularly kind up to that point. *throws up hands in exasperation*

I wasn't really satisfied by the 'you're different from the others' they kept repeating endlessly when it came to that storyline, but to be honest, I didn't really care about Angelica at all so I just sort of stopped caring whenever she was on the screen.

Barbossa was this film for me, and he wasn't even in most of the film. I thought everyone's motivations were really transparent, and Jack wasn't 'Jack-like.' For a franchise based on that character, it's pretty deadly in my opinion.

I mean, it was okay as a mindless summer flick, but I was expecting something else. I don't know ... it was just generally unsatisfying for me.

Exactly. Yesterday I watched the first and part of the second movie on a whim and the difference between them and this new movie was striking. I wonder how much of that is down to a different director and mostly different cast.

I hear that they're planning another trilogy. I don't know if I'll be as excited about the next one.
