This is so moving for me. I so admire anyone who has the combination of compassion and patience required to be this wonderful sort of teacher/mentor. I think back to my own experiences as a "student" and there were just so few times when I had anything like the connection you show here. Robert and Rebecca are lucky to have passed through your classroom!

There are many students with whom I was not able to make a connection, but it is true that Robert and I did have that. Certainly in my own schooling (all the way through) I didn't have anyone to support or guide me. Even in college it took me until my junior year to find a professor who could be that for me. He helped me to glimpse some of my potential, and was perhaps the first person to ever really teach me anything (and I was 20 years old). As I've said often, I'm one of the most over-schooled and under-educated people you may ever meet.
