The NHL is so bloated with unnecessary and unwanted teams that they are forced to hire people who can stand on skates and hold a hockey stick. At the Olympics, countries make up teams of their best skaters, passers and shooters, These guys have neither the time nor the inclination to engage in on-ice thuggery. I remember being aghast that Todd Bertuzzi was selected to the 2006 Olympic team and surprised that the Italians let him into their country. But Canada suffered bad Karma for that finishing out of the medals. That is why the best hockey is Olympic hockey. That is where you see the best of the best.
BTW, I am not normally an NDP supporter but I see nothing wrong with Jack Layton going to a bar to watch a hockey game. After all, you do.
I agree with you, more or less, on the state of the NHL. But I do think there would also be ways to make the game better with the existing teams. More players like small, speedy Martin St. Louis of the Lightning wouldn't be a bad start.
We just need General Managers to start taking more chances on guys like that.
The thing that bugs me isn't that he went to a bar to watch the game, it's that he had to be in the front row of the bar that CTV was cutting to in Toronto. Like a politician.
