Man, I have all these things I want to write about all of a sudden! It's exciting - they're mostly just blog entries I would like to make, but still, they have me in a good mood.

I'll start with this.

I'm ambivalent about this, based on what I can see in this article. I'm ecstatic that Freestyle has gotten the boot, but I don't know how I feel ( Read more... )

It will depend on how CBC handles this. It looks like Brave New Waves will be available only on Sirius Satellite Radio and podcasts. On the other hand, with the exception of a classical radio station broadcasting out of Toronto and Cobourg, the CBC is the only source of classical music radio in Canada. Pop radio in its various guises emanates from most of the commercial broadcast FM stations in Canada. Do we need the CBC to add to this?

For what it's worth, there is a commercial Classical station here in Montreal, as well. There's another station in Montreal that does jazz, too.

You make a compelling argument, Bob, but while the CBC shouldn't be about ratings, it also shouldn't find itself at the bottom of the ratings, as it often does. I just don't think that the entire country should be paying for a service with such a narrow focus and such a small audience.

I think pop music on public radio is done far differently than pop music on commercial radio, and I don't know that it's fair to compare the two, myself. It's rather like saying that since most medium and large cities have a commercial talk/news station on AM, there's no need for Radio One.
