So among the many obnoxious hastags created in Twitterland, the most recent one to make my ass itch is #songsyoudontwanttohearinjail. Har har har. Men get raped in prison. Har har. These songs makes me think of that. Har. I dunno if I'm more offended by the ignorance or the wackness. I mean, even if we don't care about prisoners and/or don't care ( Read more... )

I agree with all this. You know what's interesting to me about the whole prison rape red herring, is that prison rape still affects women too! Not to mention countless trans and gay folk. I agree the whole prison rape panic is largely a myth in most hetero men's heads and a not-so-clever way for them to stall any real conversations about sexual assault. But even the way prison rape or any male rape is talked about dismisses the severity of rape period. Men joke about it in a "don't drop the soap" kinda way or "you must be a scrawny bitch to get punked and have your cakes smashed."

OMG, that whole "cake smashing" discussion on BF about Raz B? I was ready to throw shit. Moral of the story: a lot of men aren't taking rape in any form seriously. And it all goes back to privilege, sexism, etc... for me. I have a friend here who's with an org here that works around prison rape issues. The stories on the site from survivors are really interesting and have nothing to do with dropping soap: http

Yes! And I meant to incorporate that in the entry. Thanks for mentioning it.

I try hard to stay away from the most popular Twitter tags... 'cause Jeebus only knows there's not enough pain meds in the world to deal with the head ache-inducing ignorance.

It's like the more popular it is and the longer it goes, the more ignance will come from it. Every time.
