God Revisited

Telling my family I'm atheist feels like coming out the closet. That was silly. I have no idea what it feels like to come out the closet. In fact, I've no idea what their stance on non-religious and homosexual people are. I just know both are abominations. Maybe my family views them similarly. ...but perhaps they are much more open-minded than I ( Read more... )

Ive been having a major faith "crisis" since my dad died so I know what you're talking about. There is no proof, outside of what exists in my heart...and right now Im feeling ere you care coming from

Aaawww. Don't see it as a crisis. Questioning is a part of the process for both those who believe and those who don't.

Since going to college, I've become an agnostic, but on the side of believing in a higher power, instead of the atheist agnostic.

But yeah, religion doesn't exist in my book, although observing one carefully can be good for your overall mental health. It's been proven.

I've heard that as well.

" but on the side of believing in a higher power, instead of the atheist agnostic."

You sound more like a non-practicing believer than agnostic.

"although observing one carefully can be good for your overall mental health. It's been proven."

Anything can be "proven" with a study though. Recent developments have equated the effects religion has on the brain to a disorder. Now I haven't read up on it so I dunno what to think, but, yeah.

Well the study bit was just an abstract. I think it mainly has to do with stress levels, and having a regiment/belief to confide in as a way to relieve it.

It's probably similar to how a superstitious practice like wearing your lucky drawers can boost probability of winning a game. Confidence being the key.

Anyway, I mean agnostic literally. I don't believe the existence of God can be proven, but I believe he exists.

I think I'm Atheist. I believe in God and all that but I won't step foot in church or read the bible because I think it's full of BS. But I do believe in that higher power. And even that's hard to do.

Atheist does kind of sound like something unclean and evil, something you don't want to admit to. Scream it Ebs!

"I think I'm Atheist. I believe in God and all that but I won't step foot in church or read the bible because I think it's full of BS. But I do believe in that higher power."

I think you and James are both non-practicing believers.

"Atheist does kind of sound like something unclean and evil, something you don't want to admit to."

I think my biggest fear is that I fed into that type of silliness. And still am fighting it. And was/am concerned about being viewed as "the atheist."

so what's the difference between non-practicing believer and agnostic?

dyvinesweetness December 29 2005, 21:12:04 UTC
From what I know, an agnostic is someone who doesn't believer nor disbelieve in any concept of god. Isn't atheist nor religious (or maybe in between?). A non-practicing believer is... well, someone who believes but doesn't adhere to a religion. That was me for a while.
