God Revisited

Telling my family I'm atheist feels like coming out the closet. That was silly. I have no idea what it feels like to come out the closet. In fact, I've no idea what their stance on non-religious and homosexual people are. I just know both are abominations. Maybe my family views them similarly. ...but perhaps they are much more open-minded than I ( Read more... )

Cuz that's why I'm visiting--can you get rid of shaungoldstein?

---but saw this nice chewy post...

The thing that bothers me with atheism is that you can't prove a negative anyway.

I think it was E Wilson--in his intro to Biophilia (which I haven't finished reading) that religion was the first way people organized their response to the natural world---how they tried to figure things out.

So in a way--it the first attempt to organize meaning.

Anyway- you ever see Bill Moyers interviews with Joseph Campbell? Where he talks about not claiming Jesus as his personal savior? Very compelling stuff.

I loved reading the bible when I was a kid--and reading about all the saints--they're all great stories.

You ever want to chat about god and stuff--would love to re-visit this.

Ever read Umberto Eco's Name of the Rose or Phillip Pullman's His Dark Materials? Great novels that talk about the nature of good and evil---and in waaaay more sophisticated ways than CS Lewis ever could. LOL

I wish I did! I'd have banned his ass days ago. =/ Him and that self-appointed representative of all Jews.

No, no and no. lol All seem interesting though. Man Lewis' dogma went WAY over my head. I remember reading Lion, the Witch and Wardrobe and made NO connections to Xtianty. Shoo, I need to go back and read the Rats of Nimph!!

I loved the Rats movie!

Oh, and whatever you do -- don't see Narnia the movie. A tragic waste of time.

But yeah--there are definitely allusions there. Like when Aslan gets martyred by the witch--and then resurrected. The girls are stand-ins for the two women who found the risen Christ.

Lewis was defintely a 'man of his time'- but really his Narnia chronicles are little better than xtian fanfic.

"Was born and died for my sins? Bet! I'll take that. "

LOL

saw narnia today. but i hadn't read the book, so obviously I loved it.

There's more allusions, but since I'm not that well versed in christianity either, i probably shouldn't even talk about it.

however.. there was this one speech by Aslan after he came back to life (and i might add, the stone he was laying on split in two at the time - rolling stone anyone?) about the phrophecy saying that he who gives his life for a traitor but has not done any evil himself shall never die.

"But really, you still sound agnostic to me. It sounds as if you have still left the door open for the possibility of the existence of a higher power."

I guess, but not quite. I feel like the small part of me that allows for the belief is just because I have no proof otherwise. The overwhelming part of me thinks the whole notion of god (at least as I have been prestnted) is bull. But to me, the big bang theory seems off because if the world was formed from an accident by the random elements around, where did those elements come from? I also feel like assuming a god or gods made life is just a convenient loophole filler and that just because there may be something else at play doesn't mean it is a "god."

I wonder if that made my position clearer or more unclear. lol

"My aunt gave it up immediately after my mother's death."You just reminded me that my first knowledge of an atheist was actually before that lady my gramma spoke of. It was my gramma's (church) friend's daughter. Her son died at like age 2 (maybe even a bit younger) and ( ... )

I recently learned something that pushed me farther from the word.

King James was a pedophile.

I know people that live and die by the King James Version of the bible. Seriously Ive seen churches divide because some believed that other versions of the bible were works of the devil.

King James himself was a pedophile......

Oh wow. Where did you learn that? And what is the deal with King James? I forgot the story. He made a whole bunch of people come together and translate the bible for him? Am I way off? lol Maybe i'll look it up on Wiki (though it keeps proving to not be the most reliable source for research).

I was a preacher's pet. The cute little girl with curls who knew all the bible verses, yeah...that was me. I loved Jesus...my Sunday School was filled with all the light parables...Xtianity Lite... with none of the dark political shit that was added later.

I still love Jesus...but I love the Buddha, I love the Orisha, I love all the manifestations of diety that I see in my life. Do I worship them all? no! I don't have that many hours in the day.

If that sends us all to hell, then we know we have good company!
