The Christmas Invasion Discussion Question: Rude and Not Ginger

Aug 22, 2010 11:15

The Tenth Doctor spends most of the Christmas Invasion out of commission so that by the end, like Rose, the audience desperately wants him to wake up and rescue the Earth. How did you take to the New Guy by the end of The Christmas Invasion? Were you sold by "did you miss me?" Or, like me, were you pretty much gone by "I took your hand" in the ( Read more... )

I always think how they did TCI was incredibly smart. For the new audience it was their first regeneration, and so Rose voiced everything that people were probably thinking. Stuff like "the Doctor wouldn't do this - the proper Doctor." And crying that her Doctor left her. It's a bit of a mourning period for Nine while still getting used to the idea of Ten. Very smart!

By the end of the episode I was pretty well sold on Ten. :D

Yeah, I agree. I think parts of TCI are a bit slow, but it holds up pretty well on re-watch.

Awww!

Well, Ten was actually my first Doctor, in that the first time I saw modern Doctor Who in any form, it was early series 2 on SciFi. I didn't watch the series properly at that point though, I just made a mental note to Netflix it, so then I went back and started with Nine. But the fact remains that it was seeing Ten that got me interested ( ... )

lirl well I am an idiot who decided CHRISTMAS EPISODES ARE NEVER IMPORTANT PFFFT and so I didn't end up watching TCI until I'd finished what was available of s2/s3/s4 anyway, which made it a bit weird and sort of anticlimactic. It took me longer to adjust to Nine than it did to adjust to Ten.

But like you others said, I think the episode is very cleverly structured. And Rose, yeah, I do think she's basically come around to the idea by the end of the episode. I can never really get behind the idea that she's still mourning for Nine half-way through series 2.

YES

AND THEN DONNA WAS ALL "O HAI" IN PARTNERS IN CRIME AND I WAS LIKE "WHO THE HELL..."

It was a confusing time.

For the record it wasn't TOTALLY arbitrary; the ewbsite I was streaming from didn't have any of the Christmas specials, so I figured it wasn't worth it to try and track them down.

And lol omg I watched the little Children in Need thing between POTW and New Earth, but then I got to New Earth and Rose was just like "*GIGGLE* YOU'RE SO DIFFERENT" and that was it and I was kind of like "wow she adjusted to that pretty quickly". loool

This was my first regeneration, and I was kind of elated with Rose's initial reaction to Ten. Despite the fact that I ship Ten/Rose as opposed to Nine/Rose, and that distinction is based largely in physical appearance (i.e., Nine looks like my dad, so it squicks me out), I was jazzed that Rose wasn't just like "Oh, you're so pretty!" to brand-new Ten.

By the end of TCI, I think Rose mostly-fully accepted him as the same man with a new face, but I didn't. Ten first endeared me to him with his accidental Lion King quoting, but his "no second chances" and taking down Harriet Jones put me off. Poor Ten didn't win me over until Tooth and Claw.

SAME re: Lion King but then Harriet Jones!

But Ten totally won me over with New Earth. His squeaky "yep, still got it" was adorable, but then he totally pwned all of my expectations by *proving he'd always known it wasn't Rose.* Body switching stories are always a major squick for me, and a big part of it is the disappointment that no one notices. Your friends should know you better than that. And Ten was never fooled, and Ten always cared, and that was all I needed for him to be my Doctor again. "Give her back to me." Oh man, chills.

lol, he wasn't fooled by clone Martha either. Take that, body-switching/evil clone plots!

What he did to Harriet, yes. The Doctor getting all holier-than-thou on folks bothers me sometimes. This is HARRIET FREAKING JONES MP FROM FLYDALE NORTH PRIME MINISTER, TEN!!! YOU BETTA RECOGNIZE!

I know the Doctor tries to show mercy, and I think that is absolutely wonderful, but sometimes he takes it a little too far, imo. And now I'm getting off the topic of this particular post, so I'll hush up. :)

It was brilliant the way the did TCI, but I have to admit that I was a bit of a die hard hold out on ten... it seems a bit strange now, but I spent the first part of s1 staring suspiciously at DT. I guess that since I wasn't a UK viewer I had absolutely no idea that a regeneration was coming. I don't think I warmed up to him until the first two parter!
