Reactions: Tooth and Claw

Did I say just a few days ago that I love New Earth? I do, but for sheer cinematographic beauty, it’s difficult to even equal Tooth and Claw. Is it the (erstwhile) Scottish landscapes? The burrs? The nearly pornographic focus on David Tennant’s hair? No matter. TaC is three-quarters of an hour of pure pretty. And Billie Piper looks mighty cute too.

Do not mess with Rose, or the Doctor will f*** your sh*t up, assuming Queen Victoria doesn’t pop a cap in your arse first.

Snort.

I hadn't heard about the focus on lighting Tennant's hair; God bless Texas.

yep, I completely agree. I mean I see what they were trying to do. And I don't have a problem with them being fascinated by the werewolf (or even cracking a few jokes-- as people often do in bad situations) but it was a bit over the top.

And part of the reason it took me until both two parters to really warm up to ten, the first time I watched season 2.

In a lot of ways 10 and Rose just feed off each other, and it's not always a good thing.

Amen to that. They did seem to have a track record of sometimes reinforcing one another's bad habits...

You know, since we've just started season 2, someone should keep a tally of all the episodes where Ten looks down Rose's front. We've got pictoral evidence of it in NE and TaC, but I wonder how many other times he may have done it without viewers really noticing. Definitely something to keep an eye out for in future episodes ( ... )

Your mission, should you choose to accept it...

It's like they had one person writing the death and mayhem, and another writing whee!Rose and fanboy!Doctor, without any communication between the two.

I know that the genesis of this particular script was rather odd, because it had originally been assigned to another writer, but the script came back and it didn't jibe at all with what RTD had had in mind, so he ended up writing a script of his own. I would surmise that perhaps bits had been cherry-picked from the other script, but if that were the case - assuming UK writer's guild crediting requirements align with the WGA's rules - then the other guy would either be co-credited for the script or given 'story' credit.

I'm actually one of the people who isn't really bothered by the "We are not amused" gag. Rose has met plenty of people more impressive than QV by this point. She is never outright rude, and she is allowed to have a little fun. And it's nice to see her and the Doctor so in sync and having fun (...even though she would still be mourning over Nine, methinks, but that's my problem for much of the start of S2).

No, what bothered me about this episode was this:

Rose, being her compassionate self as always, wanted to make sure someone was acknowledging Captain Reynolds’ sacrifice… but seeing him get ripped to shreds must’ve given her nightmares like whoa. Have I missed the fics that address that particular bit of trauma?

I've been meaning to write that fic for months, actually, because really, talk about some serious compartmentalization! She just saw someone mauled, and her reaction is to joyfully declare "Werewolf!"? The hug I could buy, but the complete lack of shock or horror? Even after everything they've seen, I don't buy that ( ... )

I hope you don't mind but I loved "Do not mess with Rose, or the Doctor will f*** your sh*t up" So I made an icon.

Your comment about Rose not seeming too affected by seeing the rather grisly murder of those men bothered me too.

It wasn't even so much the people dying around her thing that I thought she was being oddly unreactive to - I mean, she's used to it by now, sadly - but seeing Captain Reynolds turned into steak tartare by the wolf? And then there's just... nothing? Whiskey tango.
