Trying to tag! River Song - FN/LN and DotM,

Oct 03, 2012 22:50

I'm trying to find this dress. I'm determined! I've found some great alts (PM me if you want links) but I'm trying to narrow down my search a bit. Asking the experts! What words should I search with? What fabric is this?

Oh, I can't help with the placement... maybe it's some kind of silk? But oh, where is that second to last picture from? That's gorgeous.

I *think* I got it from a promo thing for FN/LN - maybe that's the Derilium towers?

It's not a real picture, that's photoshopped.

The fabric is, I believe, a dupioni "shot" silk. Depending on the lighting and camera angle, it's either very green or very taupe. Me, I went with a taupe-ish green that is shot with bronze. I think it will work. Oh btw--shot means that the weft (I think) is a different color than the warp. In this case the shot is a metallic, which gives the dress its shimmer, and also explains why it seems to change color in different light--and if you know this already, sorry!

I found a pattern for this dress that I cannot find at the moment, but I will try and find it for you. I will also see if it is still available.

As far as I know, this dress was never identified, hence me looking for a pattern. I should add that the one I found is VERY similar, a good seamstress could make the small changes needed, and it even has the small bow. OK, off to look.

1. I know none of this so thank you!
2. Waft? Warp?
3. What's dupioni mean?
4. So far this dress has not been ID'd on lj or coolspotters! I will keep trying. I went through 6,700 eBay results for "green sleeveless dress."

She's right. Dupioni is just a particular type of silk which is shimmery and seems to be made up of two colours at once. Usually quite expensive by the yard, unless you get lucky.
Best advice I can give is, find a costumer willing to take a commission, that's what I did. It is a great dress and worth the effort!

Dupioni is a woven silk fabric, and the threads that go one way are the warp, and the threads that are woven through those threads are the weft. If you use slightly different colors, or even very different colors in the warp and the weft, you get a fabric that looks like it's one color when tilted one way, the other color when tilted another. It can be found at local fabric stores for about 15 a yard, though finding a close color to this dress is not easy. eBay can be your friend, here. I have found some great dup ioni on there now and then ( ... )

based on what i've seen, i'm fairly sure that this dress was made, not bought. we've tried to ID it for a while, so if it's brand, it's either very obscure or vintage.
