Ginger hair ?

Feb 26, 2012 20:30

I am a natural ginger and sometimes my hair is prone to getting some sunbleached streaks in it if I'm out in the sun for too long. So now summer is over I decided to dye my lighter streaks ginger (for the first time)  to balance out my hair colour to be more Amyish. OMG NEVER EVER DYE GINGER HAIR GINGER :'( I had heaps of Casting creme gloss in ( Read more... )

I had a similar idea and a similar problem a few months ago (I am a natural reddish-blondish-brownish who lightens to more blondish in the summer, and I thought a little red wash would make it more Amy-ish), and I went to a salon to pay for the privilege of being turned a dark cold chestnut color somehow. It was awful ( ... )

Prell and other drugstore shampoos tend to have more detergents in them, which makes the color fade. ;)

Sorry we don't use the term drugstore much in Australia, does that mean the same as chemist? :p

I'm a natural blonde who went through phases where I just wrecked my hair again and again and again (because I'm stupid, apparently) and have to agree with everyone else - if your hair is at all delicate or a neat shade or anything like that, go get it done at the salon. Take lots of pictures of what your hair used to look like in case they need to match it (they did with mine) and make sure you let them know you want to do as little further damage to it as possible.

Good luck!

(And the good news is that your hair will always grow back, especially at this point. It's probably not permanent damage, even if you have to fade it out. My hair is right about where it should be and, again, I did so much crazy stuff to it that I'm shocked it didn't fall out...)

Everyone else already gave you all of the tips I was going to give you, but I just wanted to add if you ever do decide to dye your hair again, always choose at least 1 shade lighter than what you want so that it doesn't end up turning out too dark. You could also try buying some henna to use on your hair, though it probably won't lighten it, it will make it redder, and it's natural and non-damaging. Since you used a semi-permanent, I really wouldn't recommend using a color remover as those can be really damaging to your hair, and a semi will most likely wash out soon enough anyway, especially if you use some of the tips others have mentioned.

I second the henna idea. Just be sure that you're buying pure henna. http://www.hennaforhair.com has a wealth info on the best kinds and homemade mixes.

I WOULD NOT STRIP YOUR HAIR!!!

Through my experience, Naturally Ginger hair has a bit of a different texture than most hair, and I'm worried for you that if you strip it, it will make it very 'fluffy' for lack of a better word. Poofy-ish. You can also damage your hair a bit by doing that x_X If you must, I'd almost say throw in a highlighting cap and but a lower power bleach into thin strands for a shorter amount of time and then wash all of your hair together. That should make your color overall look a shade or two lighter. Unfortunately once you dye hair, it's very hard to match your natural color (especially with reds, cause they've never really bottles red perfectly), but if you're looking for a less chemicall-y (sorry I make up words) way to lighten it up a bit, wash your hair with warm water and vinegar. It is foul smelling, but if the dye hasn't settled into your hair completely, it should wash most of the dye out.

Good luck! lol :D

I reeaaallly was going to steer away from stripping my hair cos the natural ginger at my school (who don't embarce the brightness) and constantly dye their hair, it looks really dead and bleh. Thanks for the tip :)
