I am a natural ginger and sometimes my hair is prone to getting some sunbleached streaks in it if I'm out in the sun for too long. So now summer is over I decided to dye my lighter streaks ginger (for the first time)  to balance out my hair colour to be more Amyish. OMG NEVER EVER DYE GINGER HAIR GINGER :'( I had heaps of Casting creme gloss in ( Read more... )

I had a similar idea and a similar problem a few months ago (I am a natural reddish-blondish-brownish who lightens to more blondish in the summer, and I thought a little red wash would make it more Amy-ish), and I went to a salon to pay for the privilege of being turned a dark cold chestnut color somehow. It was awful!

I was told by a friend/hair-colorist (not the one I went to; my friend lives far away from me) to do two things:
1. mix a teaspoon of baking soda into some shampoo, and let it sit on your hair for 10-20 minutes. Then use a deep conditioner to close the cuticle and make your hair shiny again.
2. Wash your hair using Prell - there's something about the formula that makes it strip color more than other shampoo.

I did both, but that's because I have very thick and healthy, sturdy hair that had never been colored before. Be careful if your hair is thin or damaged in any way.

This :did: remove a good amount of the color. I did end up going back and having professional hair color remover applied in the salon, but that's because I was too impatient to wait for it to fade (it was THAT awful).

Finally, the other good news is that red hair dye fades the fastest, and whatever is left after you use the baking soda or Prell should be mostly gone in 4-6 weeks.

Good luck!

Prell and other drugstore shampoos tend to have more detergents in them, which makes the color fade. ;)

Sorry we don't use the term drugstore much in Australia, does that mean the same as chemist? :p
