A new series, a new doctor and most importantly for this comm, a new costume was revealed in 2010. The 11th Doctor's Professor meet club kid look was unveiled with some of the first day's shooting pictures in late July 2009. I must say the look is growing on me and is more of a traditional Doctor costume that one would expect with the back-to-basics approach Steven Moffatt seems to be advocating with Series 5.
Lucky for cosplayers this is a relatively easy costume to assemble as well.
Read on for the Eleven Breakdown Series 5.

Here's how I put together the Young Professory look of Matt Smith. The man behind this new look is Bafta-winning costume designer Ray Holman, who had conversations with Smith over the choices.

Donegal
A nice breakdown of the both Eleven Tweed jackets and some options out here is on Steve_Ricks blog:
http://eleventhdoctorcostume.blogspot.com/2010/05/tweed-jacket.html Smith wears 2 jackets for Series 5. The first is a brown (or fawn color as it has brown, green and cream fibers) criss-cross or window pane patterned tweed sportcoat. It was ID'd as a Harris Tweed (see article above) in a Mackenzie two by Two dogtooth tweed from the 60's. It's single breasted 2 button closure, with 2 flapped side pockets, 1 single left-side welt breast pocket, single rear vent, two brown suede elongated elbow patches and two buttons each on the cuffs. Another important note: His lapels have NO lapel horizontal 'button hole' for the boutonniere (or where Seven would normally keep his watch chain hook)! He wears this only in The Time of Angels 2 parter and Victory of the Daleks.
While this jacket was technically off-the-peg- it's vintage nature make sit hard to come by. Monatgue Jeffrey however have done a reweave of this fabric and offer this jacket made-to-order. (and they don't sell the fabric separately FYI). Cost is $700 or 450 GBP per jacket. You can contact patrick at patrickrfleonard@yahoo.co.uk and he's a nice guy to chat with. Also, The Who Shop carries these as well and they can be ordered in 3, 40 and 42 sizes form them usually when in stock.

Donegal
The second jacket worn for the remainder of Series 5 is the darker brown Donegal tweed jacket. This also is single breasted with a two button closure, 1 breast welt pocket, two side flapped pockets, 1 single rear vent and 2 buttons per cuff. The buttons are standard woven leather shanks. This jacket was custom made in-huose for Matt Smith.
However we have found the original fabric source the BBC used for the Donegal! Info Here:
http://dw-cosplay.livejournal.com/819788.html S5: Hand Woven Donegal #34111 - £39.20 ($65.50 USD) a metre, 28" wide. (you'll need 4 meters for a jacket as it's half the size.)
To order the fabric directly, you can contact them on their website
http://www.wbill.co.uk/ You cannot order direct through the website- it has to be done over phone or e-mail. It's best to talk to Ray there at info@wbill.co.uk.
W. Bill
Note: ******Please do not contact them unless you are serious about purchasing the tweed.***** The price is non-negotiable. Shipping to the US for each fabric will run about 26.00 GBP or $45.00 USD - 2 day shipping via DHL.

The good news is- this cut and pattern of Tweed jacket is fairly common to find on ebay or your local thrift shop. I found at least a small handful of good Smith style jackets on ebay over the last month (though usually you had to sacrifice the criss-cross pattern for a houndstooth or herringbone pattern.)
(Thrift Tweed find by Modernboy)
This should be one of the cheaper items to buy. On average I see these go on the lower end of $20-$50 range pre-owned. I got mine at Iguana Clothing (vintage) in Hollywood for $25 - it had the right type of color, pattern and style.

More than probably adding the patches and changing the buttons is something most Eleven cosplayers will deal with going this route.
(Iguana Jacket Rear)
Most Tweed jackets have faux woven leather shank buttons (just like the Season 12 Four jacket). You'll want to lose these for the Harris and keep them for the Donegal. The button on his jacket is a dark brown, probably in plastic- though you'll find some good matches in wood and leather buttons as well. Use the original buttons on the blazer as a size guide but when in doubt you'll want around a 23MM for the jacket buttons and around a 15MM for the cuffs.
(Mood Fabric button options - I'm using the ones just to the left of the original)
I saw some good wood and leather matches on the buttons at Michael Levine's in downtown Los Angeles. Although I ended up getting mine from Mood Fabrics over in west LA. (
http://www.moodfabrics.com/) There was no button style to reference on the box but they ran $1.00 per jacket button/$0.75 per cuff button and I'm sure if you e-mail them they can re-find the buttons and sell them to you over the phone.
(Smith's Buttons)
The elbow patches are a little trickier. The easiest option is to go to your local fabric store or suiting outlet and see what they have in stock. For an off-the-shelf pair of patches in suede that have an okay mid-brown color read I think these work the best:
http://www.createforless.com/Dritz+Suede+Elbow+Patches+Brown/pid13032.aspx?SI=a1ea7229-06f9-43c4-8455-d224eb868eb5
The Dritz beige or brown patches will do fine. They usually run $5.00-$7.00 each.

Matching Patches
Fellow member E-wan picked them up from here:
http://www.domesticleather.com/Data_Files/ElbowPatchStock.htm Ask for the chocolate patches in smooth leather and rub them down with neatsfoot oil and that should to do the trick.
I looked around for some leather suede hides at Mood and Michael Levine's and ended up getting lucky at the latter. I found a nice hide in a great color for about $35.00 on sale which I bought. Michael Levine's -
http://www.mlfabric.com/ Keep in mind you can always strike it lucky and find a jacket that already has the elbow patches.

And for those looking to make thier own jackets- a good fabric match for the 2nd Donegal tweed was found by ninjarisu at Jo-Ann:
The SKU number is 159-4142. The name on the tag is Brown Tweed Suiting, it costs $24.99 a yard, 96% wool, 4% other fibers.

Also Magnoli Clothers is now offering a custom version of the early 'window pane' tweed jacket through thier website for $395.00.

I personally think you're better off going the thrift store route - this version isn't accurate enough to justify the cost.
Cosplaysky also offers a replica of the Donegal jacket for $150.00

http://cosplaysky.com/who-will-be-doctor-matt-smith-dr-11th-coat-costume.html The Shirt:
Thanks to the keen eye of Travelling Time Lord and Xanderl on Gallifrey Base, the Smith shirt has been identified as a PS by Paul Smith Classic Fit Shirt in Burgundy. Smith also wears the Navy version of this shirt often. The pattern is aptly called "Waves".
http://www.john-anthony.com/brands/paulsmithps/shirts/43896.html
(original)
(Paul Smith - dead match on the pattern huh?)
This was also available in Navy.
http://www.john-anthony.com/brands/paulsmithps/shirts/43895.html And a Screen accurate version not requiring modifications was available as well but not discovered until Feb of 2010. More on this on steve_ricks' blog:
http://eleventhdoctorcostume.blogspot.com/2010/02/postscript-to-ps-shirt.html
(Burgandy and Navy comparison- courtesy of Starshiptrooper)
The bad news is- They were part of their Summer 2009 collection and are now (despite what the John-Anthony website says) totally sold out in both Burgundy and Navy. There were 3 other varients of this shirt available - a French Cuff version and the dubbed 'tobi.com" version and the 'unknown ebay" version.
Differences as noted by Steve Rocks are thus:
1. John Anthony
These were available in both colours; no button-stand, concealed buttonholes; plain cuffs; sleeve straps; slim fit, heavily tailored back; breast pocket; embroidered PS on sleeve placket
2. Tobi.com
Only available in blue; visible buttons, but no button-stand; striped starched cuffs; standard fitting, no back tailoring; embroidered PS on sleeve placket
3. French Cuff version Found by Ryan
Blue shirt; French double-cuffs
4. eBay - sold for £250
Very similar to (2) but top-stitching on cuff set much further in from edge; red placket buttonhole
http://eleventhdoctorcostume.blogspot.com/2010/02/postscript-to-ps-shirt.htmlhttp://eleventhdoctorcostume.blogspot.com/2010/04/third-way.htmlhttp://eleventhdoctorcostume.blogspot.com/2010/07/ebay-madness.html Otherwise you have three options:
1) Scour ebay for a used/overstock of this shirt. But this can be costly. As evidenced here in this blog post by Steve_ricks (also a good breaks down of some of the slight varients of the shirt that were available in 2009!)
http://eleventhdoctorcostume.blogspot.com/2010/07/ebay-madness.html
2) Have a reproduction made. One can always take this to a place like Spoonflower (www.spoonflower.com) have 2 yards or so made up in a shirt weight cotton and then have the shirt custom made either through a local tailor or through Magnoli Clothiers who will do a custom shirt in the $99.00 to $150.00 range. Pattern links are listed further down. www.magnoliclothiers.com. (www.baronboutique.com is another option to try as well.)
3) Find a close-enough dress shirt. Any plain burgundy or striped/lightly pattern burgundy shirt will do the job and can be found inexpensively through thrift stores, ebay or perhaps an outlet like Old Navy etc.
HorizonChaser on Gallifrey Base suggests for a get-you-by shirt - the burgundy stripe dress shirt made by IZOD which is available at S&K's Men's Warehouse works well.
or 4) Check for the Paul Smith Re-issue of the shirt! That's right Paul Smith re-issued the Waves PS shirt in October 2010 in a limited run in burgandy only.
Full review of the re-issue compared to the original shirt can be seen here:
http://eleventhdoctorcostume.blogspot.com/2010/10/paul-smith-reissue-shirt-review.html PCXD/164H/WHO-P - ref number for re-issue
http://tardisnewsroom.blogspot.com/2010/09/paul-smith-dr-who-shirt.html http://www.sabotagetimes.com/fashion-style/paul-smith-dr-who-shirt-8/ For those lucky enough to nab or spot the John Anthony version of Paul Smith shirt - a few things to note:
-These shirts run on the small side. If you normally wear a Med then get a Large. If you wear a Large get an XLarge etc. I wear a Large normally but I ended up getting an XXL by necessity and it needs very minimal alteration to fit me well. If I wore it casually I'd have no problem with it as-is.
-The Paul Smith shirt has a breast pocket while Eleven's does not. This will have to be removed.
-The Paul Smith Shirt has a covering plackett or strip of fabric covering the front buttons. Eleven's doesn't have this- so this center plackett strip will have to be removed.
-The Paul Smith shirt has plain cuffs while Eleven's shirt has a solid color bands (x5) edging around each cuff. This will have to be added/replaced using spoonflower fabric.
http://eleventhdoctorcostume.blogspot.com/2010/04/11-shirt-screen-accurate-cuff.html
Now a two stripe band fabric is provided with the Paul Smith shirt. There are two fabric straps on the inside of each sleeve (to hook or tie the sleeves when rolled up) that match the pattern of these cuffs. So the straps will have to be removed, the using a seam remover to split the two sides in half (otherwise there won't be enough fabric for the entire cuff) add or replace the lower inch or so of the cuff with this fabric. Failing this, using a solid burgundy cotton fabric will get you by here.
(the Navy and burgandy straps comparison courtesy of Starshiptrooper)
Smith of course also wore the navy version of this shirt often often as well.
(Sleeve strap)

The Pants/Trousers:
(Dogstooth Skinny Jeans by Topman)
Smith wears black cotton skinny jeans rolled up at the ankles. The jeans were identified as being a pair of Topman Black Dogstooth Design Skinny Trousers by pdraycott and Travelling Time Lord on Gallifrey Base.
http://us.topman.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?beginIndex=0&viewAllFlag=&catalogId=32052&storeId=13051&productId=1270805&langId=-1&categoryId=&parent_category_rn= Or search Dogstooth Skinny Jeans at:
http://www.topman.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/TopCategoriesDisplay?storeId=12555&catalogId=17551&intcmpid=UKHPTR&switch=1 or (USA site)
http://us.topman.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/TopCategoriesDisplay?storeId=13051&catalogId=32052 If ordering from Topman it's a good idea to go one size up on the trousers too in order to re-create the slightly baggy fit Smith has. Normal sized skinny jeans are really too tight for Eleven. So if you wear a 32" waist then get the 34" waist and so on. EDIT: The Topman trousers appear to be sold out after then went on the 50% off sale last week 10-16-09.
Also he seems to be wearing plain tapered skinny trousers also from Topman from later set pics. folks on Gallifrey Base believe these to be the 2nd trousers;
http://www.topman.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?beginIndex=0&viewAllFlag=&catalogId=17551&storeId=12555&productId=1592754&langId=-1&categoryId=&parent_category_rn=
If you cannot faind a pair then you can always try these Black Skinny jeans:
http://us.topman.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?beginIndex=0&viewAllFlag=&catalogId=32052&storeId=13051&productId=1163949&langId=-1&categoryId=&parent_category_rn= Or for a cheaper option you can try plain black cotton skinny jeans at other shops like Target:
http://www.target.com/Shaun-White-Target-Skinny-Jean/dp/B0029MMUI2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&frombrowse=0&searchView=grid5&pf_rd_r=1RKFPCEBWSRKRJK0DRZA&node=1038576&pf_rd_s=center-3&field_browse=1038576&searchSize=30&pf_rd_t=301&id=Shaun%20White%20Target%20Skinny%20Jean&field_availability=-2&searchBinNameList=subjectbin%2Ctarget_com_age%2Ctarget_com_gender-bin%2Ctarget_com_character-bin%2Cprice%2Ctarget_com_primary_color-bin%2Ctarget_com_size-bin%2Ctarget_com_brand-bin&refinementHistory=subjectbin%2Ctarget_com_age%2Ctarget_com_gender-bin%2Ctarget_com_character-bin%2Cprice%2Ctarget_com_primary_color-bin%2Ctarget_com_size-bin%2Ctarget_com_brand-bin&searchKeywords=skinny%20jeans&pf_rd_p=490276191&searchNodeID=1038576&pf_rd_i=0&field_launch-date=-1y&searchRank=relevancerank&field_subjectbin=1041828&searchPage=1&pf_rd_m=A1VC38T7YXB528&field_keywords=skinny%20jeans I've also heard there's a good match to be found at H&M stores for $25.00 - good black skinny jeans.
But any black cotton skinny trousers will do. Remember to try and get them an extra inch or two longer than normal on the inseam so when you roll them up the cuffs will have some bulk to them.
Smith later wears a pair of solid dark grey skinny trousers form Topman as well called "Grey Black Trim Skinny Trouser" later in Series 5.
(sporting the Grey skinny trousers)

The Boots:
The BBC claimed in this article:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/magazine/8160710.stmThat the Boots smith wears are part of the Autumn 2009 Prada collection. This is FALSE.
(All Saints Layer Boot)
Smith's real boots were keenly spotted by length=distance on Gallifrey Base as being a pair of the All Saints "Layer" Boot which was part of their spring 2009 collection.

Unfortunately by the time this boot was identified in late July '09, it was already sold out on the website and very few pairs remained in stock at the All Saints shops around the UK. A few fans got lucky by being proactive and picking up the odd pair for themselves at an All Saints store in local driving distance in the UK. These boots retailed for 110.00 GBP ($175.00) but now are sale for 77.00 GBP ($123.00) when they pop up. The rest of us have three options:
(My All Saints boots)
1) You can have screen accurate boots made custom for you by the same company that made them for the BBC. Matt Smith himself actually wore replicas for much of Series 5 so this is a very good way to go.
Originally identified by next_matt_smith last summer and posted by tvguy123. The company is called Theatrical Shoemakers. (They are located here:
http://www.shoemaking.co.uk/index-2.html), they list Doctor Who on their client list and have photos of the complete series five/six boots on their gallery.
stevericks adds he has worked out a deal to act as point of contact for them as they they are a small company who exclusively do work for film and television, and are NOT geared up for dealing with lots of individual members of the public.
You can read more on this info here:

tennantcoat@me.com
Please bear in mind these are custom made-to-order so expect to pay in the ballpark of 360 GBP or $565 USD per pair (either style). The price is steep, so serious inquiries only.

2) Check ebay. At least a half dozen pairs have surfaced there. They are not always identified as Layer boots, you'll need to check for All Saints boots on www.ebay.co.uk site where more pairs for this brand turn up.
3) Do it yourself options:

http://community.livejournal.com/dw_cosplay/335502.html#cutid1 The Bow Tie:
Smith wears a maroon/burgundy and also a dark navy bow tie. Modernboy spotted that this is a pre-tied variety with the strap but NOT a clip on! This style of tie was popular in the 1960's so a vintage 60's tie is a good start in looking for a match. Otherwise you can try these sites:

The Suspenders:
Smith wears skinny (1" wide or possibly less) burgundy/maroon (as well as a navy version to match that varient of the outfit) suspender with silver clip-on ends. These are X-back with metal clip. It's heavily speculated these are Swaggers braces.
Here are some options for similar suspenders though you may have to compromise with an X-back:

The Watch:
Smith wears a gold circular face watch with a gold metal expansion (or elastic) bracelet on his left wrist. Also important to note that he wears the watch face on the *inside* of his wrist.
I have spotted some good matches in the Timex, Casio, Bular, Pulsar, Citizen, Rorary and Seiko brands online.
My Current 11 Watch I scored off ebay.
Update 8-10-10:
More info on this watch has come to light on the RPF recently:
From TymerDC: "I'm pretty sure this is an early/vintage electric watch...maybe made by Timex or one of many makers when watches were going from mechanical spring wound to battery operated. If you notice there is no crown to wind the watch or to set the time... which tells me either it was removed or it sets in the back which is common for early electric watches like Timex/"
Close up shot from The Lodger:
Enhanced version
Seems to be a metallic gold or possibly silver watch face.
(Timex Watch)
Some good-enough options:
Check Citizen and Timex watches for their latest gold expansion band time pieces.

The Hair:
Unless you're planning to grow your hair out and go nuts with styling gel/hairspray you'll probably want a wig. We scored ours at our trusty haunt Outfitter Wigs in Hollywood for our Gallifrey Masque Skit in 2009.

Sonic
By most accounts (and pix) the Sonic got a re-design for Series 5.
This is easily obtainable through the toy version with sound effects available through Charater options or Underground Toys.
www.whona.com
www.mikescomics.com
www.bigbadtoystore.com
www.jrstoyworld.com
www.doctorwhostore.com
are all good options to find these in the $20 range.
These are plans for a higher end version to be offered through QMx who recently got the Dr. Who license after it expired at MFX who previously offer the Tennant sonic until March of 2010. Prototypes were shown at the 2011 comic con but still no word if these will materialize and at what price point.

Also a 'functioning' die-cast real world screwdriver version of this sonic was released by WOW Stuff:

The TARDIS Key:
Unknown right now, but I would expect like Doctors Nine and Ten before him, Eleven will be carrying the silver yale key. Check your local hardware store or locksmith for one of these.

For those who enjoyed Matt's playful look he adapted in the Big Bang wearing the Fez... well luckily finding red or maroon fez's in a similar style is not all that hard. ebay has them aplenty and there are several good listings for similar styles on amazon.com and hatwear shops.
The Lodger Soccer/Football varient costume:
From horizonchaser: Royal Blue Polo shirt, Royal Blue Football **jersey** with "Kings Arms" written in a basic sans serif block font (no idea which specific one yet) across the chest, the number "11" wearing across the back, worn over the Polo, navy blue Umbro Football shorts, Royal Blue knee-high or over-the-calf football socks, Adidas football cleats (black with white Adidas stripes and white soles with black cleats), watch we've seen before, and finally optional brown Donegal tweed coat that we've seen before.
The jersey can be found here in Royal Navy (lettering will need to be added):
http://www.customkit.com/kit-detail.asp?id=1009 The shorts are UMBRO - and have been found on ebay
The socks are likely there:

For his appearance on the Sarah Jane Adventure sin Fall of 2010 - Smith wore most of the usual stuff. Donegal tweed jacket, All Saints boots, topman skinny trousers, swagger navy blue braces, navy blue bow tie... BUT a new shirt. The shirt in question is a light blue contrast Topman shirt with black buttons. Sadly sold out now- but keep your eyes peeled on ebay (or any close re-issues form topman.com).

(Matt Hearn as probably the very First Eleven Cosplayer at San Diego Comic Con 2009 - meaning he only had about 5 days to put this together from when the first picture debuted! His efforts were rewarded when RTD publicly pointed him out at the Torchwood panel as the 1st Matt Smith he'd ever seen)
