[x-posted to my personal LJ]
So, inspired by
redstapler et al's costumes at the last Gally, at the upcoming TimeGate con I plan to cosplay a Gallifreyan Rollergirl (Doctor Who + Roller Derby = ♥ ) for one of the days. Anyway, Real World Derby Life (un)fortunately has me so busy that I'm scrambling to assemble to final pieces for the costume, leaving me with one final component needed -- a helmet.
Now I have my actual real derby helmet, of course (though it is blue and full of stickers, so it wouldn't match the red-and-orange color theme I've got going on with the costume), but that's a bit much, methinks. I know the girls at Gally wore English Bobby costume hats for their 'helmets', but I was thinking of alternate ideas. (For example, I do have an over-sized fez that I could use that I also may wear for my femme!Eleven costume, but I'm not sure since it's so big on me.)
One idea that did pop into my mind was an old school Chancellery Guard helmet (see below the cut for pictorial reference) or at least a riff on it. It's not only the perfect color, but it also fits well into the whole Gallifreyan aspect of the costume. I just...have no idea how to make something like that. My costuming skills are close to nil and while I might have a theoretical knowledge of, say, constructing a helmet from something like plaster, foam, or what-have-you, it's not something I've ever tried IRL.
Now, I probably won't have the time to complete it before TimeGate in two weeks, of course, but I wanted to put my feelers out so that I can possibly start working on it for a later cosplay event.
Here are some pics of what the old helmet prop looked like, by the way:
Anyone have any ideas? I'm sure it can be done, I just need to be steered in the right direction. Also, alternate ideas for a helmet are definitely welcome! :)
Thanks in advance!
