Winter hunger

Mar 01, 2010 21:37

Life has been pretty normal around here recently...not much to write about. My exercise regimen last week included some new qigong workouts as well as some additional ab work. I can always tell when I've done good strengthening work, because I'm hungry and tired for a few days. Healing sucks my energy like a sponge ( Read more... )

Awww... this extra snow is hard on wildlife. There was a winter in Wisconsin when we ended up finding a couple of starved owls and rescuing a couple others- because of the deep snow pack and lack of access to the usual prey.

Upon taking them to the raptor center, we were told they were getting many more than usual. :(

Poor little guys.

The food stuff is interesting- avocado REALLY helps me. I know it's high fat, but it just FEELS healthy and my energy always ups afterwards. Very hard eating right when Im not in my own 'space' but I've been trying. And everything else you list is just making me hungry. Two other foods I really like: couve (some sort of green) and acai (not the silly US diet marketed stuff... but rather frozen fruit pulp mixed into a shake with banana or blueberry or some other fruit and eaten with a bit of granola on top). Delicious and pack an energy punch as well as all sorts of healthy stuff. :)

Luckily the snow is starting to melt now. Hopefully this guy will find more food soon. I put some stale bread out for it this morning.

I have avoided avocado because of its high fat content, but it's so tasty. And some fats are quite healthy. It'll be really nice on salads.

I have shied away from acai because of all the hype and fadishness surrounding it, but it's supposed to be really packed with anti-oxidents. I tasted some acai juice once and it was yummy.

We shamelessly feed our raccoons, especially when the weather is bad. They're quite polite, and who else would eat that week-old pizza I found in the fridge? I catch myself worrying about their diet and if it is balanced, and think I have finally devolved into a crazy old animal lady. :-)

And I totally agree that our bodies use nutrients from food way better than in pill forms. When I do take supplements I try to take them with foods, especially foods that have the same nutritional content.

I love marmite for B-vitamins, but I hear tell it's an extremely acquired taste. It reminds me a little of Bragg's liquid aminos, which I used to use when I was a vegetarian. Very umami. My brother still hasn't forgiven me for making him think it was good!

Awww...you're like a pagan St. Francis!

I hadn't though about taking suppliments with "like" foods. That makes some sense.

I tried vegemite when I was in college and didn't care for it. Rob's friend suggested a miso gravy as a soy sauce substitue, I think also for the B-vitamins. I love miso, so I think I'll stick with that. ;-)

oh gosh the poor little guy is so skinny. :/

Of course your body absorbs nutrients from food better than it does from vitamins--we evolved to eat food, not vitamins! I'm not saying vitamins are bad, just that if you can get it from food, you should.

Raccoons do hibernate during the winter, so she's probably just woken up and is starting to forage. But this year, unlike typical years, snow is covering her normal food supplies. I really hope it melts soon.

You know, I used to think I ate a pretty healthy diet and the vitamins were just backup anyway. And maybe it was. But I guess my needs are a whole lot greater now that I'm rebuilding myself from the inside out. So I have had to add a wider variety of foods to my diet.
