Oh wow. Interesting.

Many thanks to the St. Ralph the Blessed for the safety reforms that made air bags and the like possible. :)

Just saw a documentary about him ("An Unreasonable Man") and I admit, I was a bit embarrassed to realize how little I knew about what he did as a consumer advocate decades ago. It was truly good work, and probably saved literally thousands and thousands of lives.

9&3 actually gives you the best control for quick swerves and the like, but in many models of cars, it's not possible to wrap your fingers all the way around the wheel in this position. 4&8 is a good compromise, as it's close to 3&9, it's less tiring than anything higher on the wheel than 3&9, and as you point out, your arms will just get blasted back into the seat by an air bag rather than out to the sides or up into the roof.

Columbus PD teaches their cadets (or used to) to turn the wheel by shuffling it in the 4&8 instead of going hand-over-hand, but I never heard why. I thought it had something to do with keeping both hands on the wheel or keeping the hands below the top of the door for cover, but now I suspect this airbag thing may have something to do with it.

How bad were the storms out your way?

Rob tells me they are teaching new drivers that shuffling style of turning the wheel, as well. He thinks it has to do with the airbag thing. I tried it today; it feels strange and will take some getting used to.

Forgot to answer your question. We got lots of rain and lightning, but no hail, and I didn't see any wind damage. So I guess it wasn't as bad as it was to the west of us.
