CSA haul

I think I have missed recounting the last couple of CSA deliveries, but here's what we got this week: kale, turnips (yay!), mesclun salad mix cabbage, tomatoes, hot peppers, radishes, and a pumpkin. Last week we got green tomatoes that I still need to fry, as well as kale and potatoes, and probably other things I have forgotten ( Read more... )

What is a CSA delivery? I mean vegetables, obviously but from where? It is still over eighty-five degrees here in the daytime, but at least it is cooling off some at night.

CSA stands for Community Supported Agriculture, and is basically a co-op share from a local farm. I buy a seasonal share (actually I'm splitting a share with two other people) and the farm makes a vegetable delivery once a week. I have a share with the Sippel Family Farm here in Ohio. Organic, local vegetables, healthy and tasty: can't beat that!

Ah, sorry, no recipe. I like making soups and usually just go with whatever I have on hand that looks like it would go well together. I had to eat more of the soup to remember what I put in it, but I think this is a pretty fair approximation:

4 med. carrots, sliced
3 stalks of celery, sliced
half a red onion, chopped
3 med. cloves of garlic, chopped
a couple handfuls of orange lentils (maybe about a cup?)
1 red bell pepper, chopped
half a head of cabbage, chopped
liberal shakes of Penzey's Spices brand Turkish seasoning
a few shakes each of dried basil and oregano
black pepper

I like things a bit spicy, so I think it might have been improved with some red pepper flakes. But I still like it very much as it is.

I hear ya' on the weather. Two days ago it was over 80 degrees & we were melting. Today, my fingers are numb & I'm cuddling with the dog to defrost them.

Blech- if it keeps jumping around like that, I'll get sick for sure. :-P

Heh. I did end up getting sick. I woke up with a sore throat this morning, so I'm taking the day off. It doesn't feel too bad, and hopefully won't last more than a day or two. I seem to get one every fall!
