Clearing ivy

Jul 08, 2006 17:30

I don't like ivy, I never have. I always knew I would want to remove the ivy from around the foundation of the house. Besides the fact that I don't like it, it can damage the siding and pull it away from the house. So this afternoon I started the job. I have decided to clear just the front for now. As soon as it is done I'll put in some shade ( Read more... )

for decent suggestions you'll need to give us a bit more to go on - how much shade do you mean by "shade"? all day shade? half day shade? dappled shade most of the day? or what? and what is the soil like - dry, moist, clay, somewhere inbetween these things?

That area gets dappled shade before noon, and full shade after noon. The soil here is silt loam, somewhat poorly drained (so says the soil survey map). Agriculturally the main crop is hay, with soybeans second. Does that help?

hostas are very difficult to kill.
ferns, astilbes, goatsbeard, heuchera, native ginger, rogersia, monkshood, ...

you're buying late enough that there's a decent chance the nursery will already be out of some stuff.

Thanks for the suggestions! The local nursery ended up being closed on Sundays, and I didn't feel like driving half an hour to Columbus. So the buying will have to wait for now. But when I do I promise to post pictures of the completed garden :)

Ivy murderer!

I've long wanted an ivy covered home, with brick or stone walls.

Heh. I guess I *am* a murderer. Want some ivy? You are welcome to it.

It would be better if my house was brick or stone, but it has aluminum siding. The ivy has already started pulling the siding away from the frame in a couple of spots. So not only do I not like it, but it is destructive to the house.
