I don't like ivy, I never have. I always knew I would want to remove the ivy from around the foundation of the house. Besides the fact that I don't like it, it can damage the siding and pull it away from the house. So this afternoon I started the job. I have decided to clear just the front for now. As soon as it is done I'll put in some shade plants.

Clearing this much took a little over an hour, in three sessions.
The ivy vines are up to the width of my index finger and woody. I'm using pruning shears to cut the thicker ones as I pull the mass away. It is slow going. My goal for the day is to get to get to just past the edge of the house. Then I'll hoe the cleared ground in preparation for mulching and planting. I go to the plant nursery tomorrow and pick up some perinneals, probably whatever looks good to me. Suggestions are welcomed.
