Writer's Block: Pick an era, any era

May 12, 2008 05:19

In some ways I wouldn't want to leave these times, with all of the medical advances and women's rights and whatnot.  However, being a total history nerd, I've always fantasized about living in other times, especially the Victorian/Progressive era.  I love the spirit of the times, and the dresses and architecture.  I also wish I could have been ( Read more... )

You make a good point! It would be awesome to wear those fashions and costumes - just for the sake of it~
You're game with a native tribe. If I went back to my ancestors time, we'd be eating brains. mm. full of protein haha~

Ah, brains! Yeah... I'd like to find a non-brain-eating tribe. Though if I didn't know any different, I guess I'd be all about it!

And yeah, being fascinated by the history of fashion, I'd love to go back to times when I could wear those clothes every day! Of course, some wouldn't be terribly comfortable... but then again, neither is everything I wear now!

I sometimes have students ask me what the sixties were like. I think I disappoint them when I say they were pretty much like now. Our present age is also a time of enormous social change and catastrophic events (we just lived through one down here in New Orleans). Trust me, 40 years from now you'll be sitting around with a bunch of kids asking you what it was like back in the 'oughts,' provided there's anything left to sit on ( ... )

Oh, don't worry... I'm a history student, I'm aware of the whole "things aren't like we think they were" and "you'd only want to live then if you were rich" deals. Note my "don't know that I'd want to go back in the first place" caveat ( ... )

I think what also attracts a lot of people my age to the "mythical" 60s is the music. I was just talking to some of my friends and we wished we could have been there when bands like the Doors and the Grateful Dead and Jimi Hendrix were becoming popular and putting out new music, to have been a part of the crowds that greeted them at concerts... to someone who never had the chance, it sounds amazing.Well, yes and no. I saw the Gratefull Dead at the Avalon and the Fillmore ballrooms in the late sixties, and my appreciation of them seemed predicated on the quality of the acid. Without the drugs, they were boring, like watching paint dry ( ... )

Interesting about Jimi Hendrix- I'd like to check out those other musicians you mentioned. I'd read he got the "play-guitar-with-your-tongue-and-behind-your-back" (haha) stuff from someone, but I didn't know who. Also, that's neat about the band you played in.

Here's a question: if I'm interested in the blues, what should I start listening to? Who are the staples and the must-knows of the genre? I'm familiar with just a little bit of modern blues- Stevie Ray Vaughn, mostly, b/c the radio station I listen to in Indianapolis plays his stuff. But where's a good place to start?

Well, if you like Stevie Ray, you'll probably like Buddy Guy. Personally I'm partial to his early Chess releases like "I Was Walking Through The Woods," but his more recent things, like "Damn Right I've Got The Blues" are also very good ( ... )
