Writer's Block: Pick an era, any era

May 12, 2008 05:19

In some ways I wouldn't want to leave these times, with all of the medical advances and women's rights and whatnot.  However, being a total history nerd, I've always fantasized about living in other times, especially the Victorian/Progressive era.  I love the spirit of the times, and the dresses and architecture.  I also wish I could have been there in the 60s (counterculture, fashion, activism, music) and the 20s (fashion, culture).  I think I would have fit in really well in those times.  It would be neat to be in some Native American tribe before 1492, too- as long as it was a peaceful, equitable society.  And of course, I always wish I could go back to the 90s.  Great music, of course, and it was about like it is now, except no recession, no Bush, no internet, no cell phones, no huge war... sigh... and everyone seemed to have more of a cynical-yet-honest attitude then.  It's hard to explain.  It's also based on my childish observations.

Other runners-up:
Revolutionary America- society was actually not too uptight, and of course, it was an exciting time politically, and again, the dresses were pretty.
Rural England in the early-to-mid 1800s- think Jane Austen or the Bronte sisters and princess-waist dresses.  Sigh!
Marie Antoinette's court... making sure to get out before the revolution, of course.
Some German village a few hundred years ago... I really don't know when would be ideal... I just like the idea of wearing a dirndl and living in a German village and being jolly and flirting with boys while drinking beer in a tavern, then eventually getting married and raising little German children and having a cookoo clock.  I have no idea why.  I guess it's my heritage.
During the Civil War or either World Wars... except it might be too sad.
The same town as Laura Ingalls Wilder lived, during her teen years... was that De Smet?

Sigh!  I'll stop now, before I list every period in history!
