"He took his life."  Are there sadder words in the English language?

(A family friend- a friend of my sister's- died last week.  We didn't know how he died, but it was obviously already very sad.  We thought it might have been diabetes-related, since his obit said donations could be made to a juvenile diabetes foundation.  He was a wonderful man:

That's so sad. A guy at my university apparently died this weekend driving on his way home for break. They think he fell asleep at the wheel. It's so tragic how life can be cut so short without us realizing it. But then again it might be a good thing that we don't always realize it because then things would just get too depressing. Either way, this is still really sad.

Yeah, I agree- it's scary how sudden death can come, when you're just driving somewhere or whatever. It's bizarre that someone you know, who seemed to be in the prime of their life, would die.
