I always enjoy the recipes you post. In this case, I can't help but think of seasoning the chickpeas with tumeric, coriander, chili, and cumin though. It's practically reflexive for me. And fresh, in season tomato - though that's not for everyone, I've learned.

This said, the recipe offers several alternatives for what to cook the chickpeas with. Some of them are indeed those you listed. Really it could be anything though. It's a light flavor compared to the avocado and cilantro.
Yeah, when I made them, I realized they could definitely use more flavor. So, when I do them again, I'll definitely add some more spices. I might even be tempted to chop up a fresh jalapeno in them.
