Glad Grainne came to no harm chasing that kite, but if she doesn't know how to swim yet, she needs to learn. Some children are naturals in the water and swimming comes easily to them even without lessons. Some aren't. Regardless, *every* child needs to learn the basics of swimming as a safety issue. I think it's especially important in the case of SCA children who may be caught, as she was, wearing emcumbering clothing. Drowning can happen so quickly in ordinary circumstances, but I imagine it's even more of a hazard if the child is wearing long heavy clothing that can trap their legs in water. Additionally, children with little body fat will have a harder time floating, making the situation even more deadly. Training can lessen the panic and help the child rescue themselves or at least stay calmer until help arrives.

Hope you all stay safe this summer, in the water and out! :)

She has taken swimming lessons on several occasions and she will again in the fall. It takes a while to really learn to swim. I really didn't learn until I was 10 and my parents had a pool.

We didn't have a pool and I never had formal swimming lessons, but I had access to the water every summer at rental cottages, campgrounds, etc. Mom said she didn't think there ever was a time I couldn't swim. The first time they tried me in the water, there I was paddling away. And it wasn't as if I had good models either. Mom, Dad and my brother were not good swimmers - they all could swim minimally, but were never comfortable in the water. I was a waterbaby who loved the water (and still do). I think this was one case where the genes showed though. Apparently, my birth mother was a swimming champion.

I hope both your girls eventually learn not just to swim but to love the water. :)
