Actually, IGN.com's review said that the selling point of the movie wasn't the horror aspect, but the human aspect. That is to say, aparently the characterization (what? they have that in horror movies?) is really good, and much of the positive reviews probably stem from the storyline apart from the horror aspect.

Just goes to show that if horror spent more time on the plot and characters as opposed to blood and gore, the movies CAN be good in a technical sense, not just in a fervid fanboy obsessive mind-state sense.
