To any of the sewing-minded peeps on my f-list, do you have any advice re: sewing machines?

I'm thinking about something cheap and cheerful, but are there any features that you couldn't live without? Any brands that you'd avoid? Tips and tricks are more than welcome.

Good news: I think I know what I want to do with my life. I want to become a researcher. There is nothing I enjoy more than being asked to find out something and getting the information. Hell, I'm professionally curious. I'm not particularly bothered what field, either. Could be publishing, journalism, or anything non-academic.
