I wanna go back to my little grass shack

I'm back from my holiday on Kaua'i and have been sorting through the over two thousand pictures taken by me and my siblings since I got home. Fortunately for you, I am not going to post all of them. Unfortunately for you, I am going to post quite a few. ;) Once I'm done, I need to get started on my Summer Hallows Jumble entry. I've got the ( Read more... )

Yeah. It totally didn't suck. At all.

Going to work today did, though.

Such gorgeous pictures! It looks like you all had a fantastic time. The underwater camera was definitely a good purchase, heh. And it's excellent that you were able to make friends with all the local cats so quickly. ;)

Shave ice! That is some good stuff. Did you get to try any of the green tea shave ice with red beans?

I've only tried a kayak like that once, and found it very low and tippy compared to a canoe, but I think I could be convinced to try it again, heh.

Very glad to hear you have an idea for your Meta piece. Good luck with that!

I think the local cats just walk around looking cute and waiting for the tuna and other leftovers to be left by the door or on the porch. I always buy a bag of cat food. Better for them and doesn't piss off my mom when she wonders what happened to all the tuna.

I have to say that I'm not very adventurous when it comes to my shave ice flavors. It's gotta be Root Beer and something else. Orange, Cherry or Creamsicle (like a 50/50 bar) were fav's. I did try a Kapaa Sunrise with passion fruit, mango, pineapple and coconut, which was yummy. Not a tea drinker so the last thing I'm gonna do is put it on my shave ice!

The kayaks do require some balance but I only felt close to tipping over when I let Claire and Elliot paddle while I sat in the middle seat, which is really meant for kids.

Started sketching tonight on the Meta piece. I'm feeling good about it. How's yours going?

Oh, that's an interesting question -- would a non-tea-drinker like green tea flavored sweets? It might actually be worth a try, honestly. The "green tea" in these things is not the same as the green tea you brew out of a teabag (so, not like in my icon!). It's actually called matcha, and it's what they use in Japan for the tea ceremony. It's thicker than regular tea, and has a (pleasantly) bitter taste that makes for a great combination when used in something sweet. I don't know that a non-tea person would like it, but to me it's different enough from other kinds of tea that it's not a forgone conclusion that you wouldn't.

And I saw below you said the shave ice comes with optional adzuki beans and a scoop of vanilla ice cream -- that's just how they do green tea ice in Japan, and support my theory that Japan is where the Hawai'ians got it from! Uji kintoki, yum.

Well, your theory is absolutely correct. Japanese immigrants, brought over in the 1800's to work the sugar cane plantations, brought shave ice with them. When they left the plantations, many opened their own stores, the most famous of which is Matsumoto's on the North Shore of Oahu. Since then, the "D" has been dropped from Azuki beans. At least in the islands.

There is a mobil Shave Ice truck that makes the rounds in LA. I'm waiting for it to show up somewhere close so I can see what they offer. Don't know if I'll be brave enough to try a green tea flavor.

These are amazing pictures! Looks like you had a grand time. I especially love the underwater shots.

And you know I'll be waiting to see what you have for the jumble - been a while since we actually had a good dose of R/T goodness. Did you see the new morose pic that came out - they have such depressing expressions and they're supposed to be newlyweds! I can understand Remus' gloomy expression, but why does Tonks look just as miserable? Oh well..

It's because she's finally realized that some bright spark on a film set once thought it was a good idea to made DT look as sinister as Voldy - and it really wasn't. ;)

The scenes and costumes are so dark, her pink hair probably stood out too much so they toned her down.

Pity! Since that's really what Tonks is supposed to do - stand out among all the browns and blacks and blondes! That's what draws everyone's attention - and she doesn't seem to give a damn about that either.

I don't understand why the movies can't even get these little details right - one would think they'd realise that atleast 70% of their audience are people who have actually read the books, and 50% of those are actually people who notice the little things ;)

Aloha! Thank you for the owl which has just brought me a picture of a beautiful valley and stunning blue sea. It's put me in the holiday mood first thing.

Ooh, wonderful pics. The underwater ones are so good, and I love Mr Monk Seal chilling out on the beach. I'm sure the local cats made a beeline for you (a catline?) and vice versa, and that graveyard looks ripe for a few ghosts and sinister goings-on even in bright sunlight.

Good to see you got the pink bike/broomstick, Tonks. It's obviously helped with those pesky Meta prompts and I'm wishing you both speed and luck with them.

I didn't know what Shave Ice was but now I want to try some...

The hike from the top of the Waimea Canyon down to the Napali coastline is 11 miles. Piece of cake for two experienced hikers like the Gilpins. It's coming back up that's a bitch. And no cozy B&B at the bottom either. I would like to try it one year but will have to wait for some of the kids to get a little older. Of course, I'll be a little older as well ( ... )

I so want to go to Hawaii now! The underwater camera was very cool!

When you get to Hawaii, don't bother going to Oahu. Sure it's got Honolulu and Waikiki, Pearl Harbor and Diamond Head, but that's all touristy stuff. Maui's got a nice blend of touristy things to do and natural Hawaiian sights. Kaua'i is for relaxing. Or go to the Big Island for Volcanos. Molokai is the least built up. Hope you get to experience them one day soon!
