Entry 21 - Old Enemy, New Face

Janus Cascade. He's alive. And not only that ... he's become a Demon. Metal skin, blood like quicksilver, burning crimson eyes ... it's just like the pictures in the storybooks. The Guardians were terrified of him. No, not Janus; the power inside of him. And I hate to admit it, but even I was kinda scared, seeing him in his Demon form. It seems ( Read more... )

So you're dealing with demons.

Yeah, pretty much. The very same creatures that waged war against humans one thousand years ago. Their power is absolutely terrifying.

I really don't know what to expect anymore. The Guardians seem to be telling us something. They've pointed out some kind of ruined shrine to the southeast. I think ... they want to help us fight the Demons.

If they're so powerful why don't they just fight the demons themselves?

Because the Guardians are insubstantial, spiritual entities. They need a Medium to manifest their powers in this world. In other words, us. Gallows said that's probably why his granny left us just have the Mediums and set us loose on the world. She and Shane probably saw all of this happening and planned accordingly. 'Course, I don't put much stock in prophetic dreams and all that hoo-haw.

Of course it's scary to think a psycho like him with that kinda power! I mean, damn, can you imagine the kinda rampage this guy is gonna go on?!

I'd really rather not get involved, but I have the feeling that as long as these Mediums are tied to me, I'm gonna be seein' Janus' ugly mug a lot more.

Jet, you've gotten yourself in way over your head this time.

Oh, and why wouldn't you think of Clive as the type to have a family? Sure, it's unusual for a Drifter, but... it makes sense to me, anyway!

Gee, I dunno. Having a family and being a Drifter don't exactly mesh up, ya know? You gotta leave 'em for long periods of time. Just doesn't seem like something any sane parent would do to their kid.

My father managed well enough. As long as you're a good parent when you're there...

I wouldn't know. My old man dragged me along on his missions, so I was never really apart from him for more than a few days at a time. But I guess most kids can't handle that kinda lifestyle.
