Dollar stores have started to carry brow craft paper. 3 feet by 14 feet long. While not as wide as the newsprint, it is sturdier and requires less taping.

Would it be possible to commission you to make and sell me a coat at a reasonable price?

It would depend entirely on when you need it by. I'm a college student with two part-time jobs, so I wouldn't be able to have it done by Halloween. I could arrange to have it by the end of November, though.

My commission fee for this coat is $60 with an embroidered caduceus, or $54 with an iron-on one. Raw materials cost about $30 for the white coat, $35 for red (white twill is cheaper where I can buy it). You would also need boots, gloves, and goggles, and prices vary depending on where you get them. If you're still interested, let me know!

Which outlet do you recommend buying the white twill from? I haven't taken the plunge into buying fabric yet, but I will this weekend. So far my options are pretty much Hobby Lobby, Joann Fabrics, or Wal-Mart.

I would recommend JoAnn simply because they take coupons! Look in your Sunday paper for a JoAnn coupon, or a Michael's coupon because they will take competitor ones as well. That will drastically cut down on the cost of your coat! The red twill I bought from them worked wonderfully.

Does this pattern have side splits? :)

Yup.

Sewing directions:
8. Sew narrow hem on front left below waist. Use only the 5/8” seam allowance.
9. Sew narrow hem on back left and right below waist. Use only the 5/8” seam allowance.

Thanks for all your work on this and sharing it with us! Looking forward to your finished project! I've started working on this project, but do not understand your instructions for the collar. Is there any length added to the original pattern? How do the markings match up with the body of the jacket?

Thanks again!

I'm afraid can't explain it much better than I did in the Collar section. The final collar will be approximately 2 to 2+1/2 times the length of the original pattern piece. I suggest that you read over the instructions again and match up each of the instruction steps to the pictures.

The only match-up markings you put on will be the ones pictured here, on the far right side of the collar and its mirror-image mark.

Please let me know if you still need more help!

I think I understand now...
We're squaring off the rounded corners and adding overlapping length for the button closure. Is this correct?

Since these directions are easily confused, I'll try to clarify them with brackets.

The first rounded corner will be cut off [1+5/8” to the right] of the [dot next to the 5] on the [far right side]. The other cut will be made [5/8" to the right] of the [far left end]. Don't forget to trace the pattern piece the third time, when mirror-image match-up point is the "center front" dot as shown here. You won't actually be squaring a rounded corner on the left since you extended the length by flipping the pattern piece over again.

Thanks for posting these! I've got a question about tracing the back section. I'm not sure if they've changed the pattern or not, but mine has a shaped back seam and extra fabric to hem the slit in the back. Should I just match up the top of piece 4 and the bottom of piece 4 and use the straight line of the CB fold instead of following the curve of the pattern piece?

You took the words right out of my mouth.

Good luck!
