The skirt is done! I'm so proud of myself. Pictures below the cut, as always.

Great work! In a day! Wow!

For decoration for your steampunk spencer, why not something like that frilly Victorian ironwork that you see on iron railings and such? Scrollwork as embroidery? Or military braid? Like jacket no. 5 in this post. Or even just contrast topstitching. It doesn't have to be elaborate. A couple rows of contrast stitching at the seams and edges could look quite nice.

Thank you! Fantastic suggestions for the decoration, I'm definitely tempted by the military braid.

Very nice!
I always find that when I make an Edwardian style skirt that the waist stretches so much between cutting and sewing that I can't even ease it onto the waistband, I have to pleat or gather it. I was hoping your post would somehow involve avoiding this problem for my edification, but your pattern has gathers as part of it, so unfortunately not.

Greetings. I'm fairly new to this community, and I think this might be my second comment to any dress diary, not having anything in the works at the moment (or for a couple of months in the future, at least) to make a diary about.
Do you stay-stitch your garment pieces once they're cut out and/or marked? That would help prevent the stretching.

I have read, and found in my experience, that stay-stitching stretches the fabric as it passes through the sewing machine. Of course, after that the stitches prevent it from stretching further. the only way I see to stop the machine stretching it would be to stay-stitch before it is cut out, or maybe doing the stitching by hand.

H'mm. By hand, I would think.
