The Thing About Macey (Gallagher Girls books, Cammie/Macey, PG)

The thing about Macey, Cammie thought, was that you could never quite figure out what was going on with her. First she was some bored beautiful rich kid who ended up in the school despite Cammie's best tour-guiding efforts, and then she’d become a confidante, an actual friend, not to mention someone who knew more about boys than practically anyone in the school.

Macey was the boy expert, fluent in the language of boy, practically worthy of a PhD in boys (which she so would have gotten if the Gallagher Academy actually gave out doctorates instead of diplomas despite the fact that Liz’s latest biology project had just disproved the latest research at several Ivy League colleges or that Cammie’s language skills - boy excluded, obviously - could have gotten her any number of top jobs even though she couldn’t even vote yet).

Macey knew everything there was to know about these mysterious creatures, and yet she didn’t even have a boyfriend. Wasn’t even looking for one. Didn’t care in the slightest what cute boy might be out there, waiting to approach her and invite her for a burger and a movie. No, Macey was instead choosing to spend her time with Cammie. Ordinary boring Cammie who had nothing remarkable going for her except being the headmistress’s daughter, and even that wasn’t so special considering Macey’s background.

And yet it was Cammie who was being kissed by Macey as though she was the most desirable creature in the entire planet. Cammie was pretty sure it wasn’t a ruse of some kind, that there were no hidden cameras (apart from the standard security ones, of course) watching them and grading either of them on their kissing skills or Macey’s ability to convince Cammie that she was really into this.

Cammie was pretty sure that Macey wasn’t this good an actress. But the thing about Macey was that you just never knew. You could never be absolutely certain. So she leaned into the kiss and enjoyed it, but remained vigilant for any suspicious activity. Just in case.
