I can go to sleep tonight without wondering what will happen to those I love if McCain were to drop dead in a year and leave Sarah Palin as our President. Your last comment has made me think a bit about my own use of the phrase "proud to be an American" -- when I use it, which is extremely rare (can't really remember the last time I used it before last night, actually), it is shorthand for "proud of Americans," the same way I would use the phrase "I'm proud of my family," which is something else I didn't have a choice about being born into. Simply being born into a country, or a family, isn't itself an accomplishment, but I can be proud of the accomplishments of the people who make up that country or family, and be proud to be among them, if that makes sense. And last night, I was proud of Americans -- proud of us for coming so far, and for giving me hope that we can go even farther (since some of last night's results also reminded me just how far we still have to go).
