I think as you have already said - much depends on the image and textures used, along with the end result you get.
I know that after applying the gradient to the background pic here, I used a plain white paper texture, and ate away at the edges of texture layer with a soft edged round brush, as I didn't want it to interfere with the image of him...
I have done a full tutorial here for that icon if that helps... TUTORIAL.....
I shall dig out some other examples if I have any that I can PM to you also :-)
